anal problems My 12 year old Yorkie "Haggis" has developed a large lump on the left side of his bottom. He had been fine until yesterday when I noticed this, although he had been straining to go to the toilet but this occasionally happens as does the opposite. I feared the worst and took him to the vet who diagnosed a tumor which was then revised when I told them he had been straining to poop. On investigation they discovered he had ruptured himself just behind his anus and the excrement was not escaping. he was given an enema and some laxative whilst they confer on whether he is fit enough for surgery to sew the rupture ( he has a heart murmur and a trachea problem although all under control) he seems healthy and unaffected although I am extremely concerned. Has anyone else had a similar experience???

I don't know if this is even close but Magnus had his rectum collapsed when he was a puppy. I noticed him really straining to potty. He strained so hard his rectum was sticking out. The vet treated him by putting sutures, prescript/blend food diet, etc.. so Magnus would have easier time going poo. Sorry your pup's having so many issues... I hope he gets better soon.

Thank you for the concern, he is back to the vets on Thursday. It appears that he may have an enlarged prostate which has caused the blockage Apparently they can reduce this with an implant and try to heal the hernia naturally. This would avoid surgery which would be a risk given his heart condition. Anyone else had similar symptoms?

He has now had an xray and has been referred to Glasgow University for as scan and further ultrasound investigation. seems the prostate is enlarged and blocking everything inside. He seems ok in general terms and is lying on my desk at work sleeping (so no work being done!) Beside myself with worry but can only hope for the best.

Wasn't the vet going to treat him with some implant and reducing the hernia naturally? Or is that where Glasgow Uni comes in? One of the hardest thing is to wait for results and finding out how you can make them better when they're sick. Both you and Haggis will be in my prayers. Please keep us updated.

The vet thinks the situation might be more serious and the xray is difficult to analyse in a dog so small. Glasgow Uni is leading edge in Vet Science so any options available to make him better.

Great News! Having visited the Vet Hospital at Glasgow University and had an ultrasound, it appears the Haggis does have a prostate problem however it is not a tumor and there are no signs of growths anywhere!!! The vet now believes the problem can be managed medically with a number of drugs which will reduce the prostate and allow him to return to normality. The shot he was given last week appears to be working as he is now pooping little and often, a good sign. The "wee man" hasn't had his troubles to seek in his 12 years (he has in addition a heart murmur, collapsed trachea, colitis,..... and takes a handful of tablets twice per day in addition to an aerodawg inhaler!) however you wouldn't suspect any of this as he has a fantastic nature and loves everyone except the postman! Lets hope he gets a period without issues. Many thanks to everyone who wished him well, I will update on his progress.

| Sending prayers for Haggis and for you! No fun when our babies are not feeling well. I have to ask, is Haggis a Scottish Yorkie by chance??

Haggis Poor baby, he sure has a lot to contend with and does not need the prostate problem as well. Great news though that there is no tumor and that he can be managed with drugs. Also you, and he, must be happy he is on the mend and pooping again. What a brave little boy to deal with all the medications and issues. I hope he does not eat the mail as well as go after the postman. LOL! Love the name, as a Scot I really can appreciate it. ;-)) Does he get some Haggis at the New Year as a special treat? Praying he gets well from this issue soon and is a happy little dog again.
