I am happy to read that Tibbe is home again with you tonight, but I agree with Crystal - I would at least ask for that bile acid test to be done. Why not, right?

I never saw - did you mention to the vet about giving Tibbe his heartguard yesterday? I still think that maybe that triggered something (not necessarily that the heartguard is bad but with his sensitive tummy, maybe he isn't handling it well or something). Just something I would also mention if you haven't.

Praying that the meds at least settle Tibbe down some for the night and you both can get some rest. Hugs!

I am so glad litle Tibbe is doing better. These Yorkies can get very sensitive stomachs. Are you writing down every time you go to the vet what meds he gets and why. I keep a running record on my Yorkies illnesses and vet trips. Otherwise I would forget when and why I took them over the years. I am going to say thank you prayers for Tibbe tonight!

I'm late to this thread, but just want to add some vibes and prayers for Tibbe. I know how you feel about him, it is the same way I feel about Jenna. You and I could both be found crying when we get our babies home from the hospital!
I hope whatever is ailing him is sorted quickly and he can get back to being the happy and healthy Tibbe that we all know and love.
((((((((((Huge hugs)))))))))))) for you. xxxx

I am late in seeing this thread and am so glad to see isn't something awful and scary. Bless his sweet heart....I hope he is feeling better quickly and I'll say a prayer. I think we all understand going into panic mode when one of ours is sick. Hugs to you!

Tibbe's may be perfectly normally, butit is worth a check. If normal then I'd lean oward what your vet is saying...idiopathic tummy troubles.
I quite agree now that I know that about the values sometimes being normal in some dogs. For the chance that something is wrong, I'm getting that test. I'll let him get over this bout a bit as he's quite discombobulated right now and just not feeling well. He almost acts like he does after anesthesia - not quite as bad as that but still very whiney, clingy and vociferous about things - almost like a drunk person. But he never acted drugged this morning as if he'd gotten a dropped pill or anything. It was just his loud bowel sounds - so loud you could hear them over TV, restless but listless, not playful, clingy, not eating/drinking, that very loose stool and standing holding his head down, licking his lips. He's not doing all that tonight but he's acting weird and out of character with all this loud growling at noises and whining for things and standing looking at me across the room and then wanting to crawl right up on me to sleep. It's scary when they act odd like this.

I also beginning to wonder if somehow, besides his tummy problems, that Heartgard yesterday afternoon had an extra strong dose of medication in it - or, gulp, had another medication in it! Or he's got liver shunt or something like that and the ivermectin just kind of poisoned him. He was awfully kinetic during his obedience work last night - overdoing everything and surging into every trick before I got the word out - hyper. Very hyper. And then this morning his tummy and other sx. and tonight acting like he does after anesthesia to some extent. All in all, I think it is past time for his bile acids test. Well, he's sleeping soundly now so I'm going to stop watching him and try to get a nap.

I'm just seeing this. I'm so sorry Tibbe isn't feeling well. I'm glad he's home and that everything so far is negative, but same as I tell my patients...go with your gut. If you feel like something is wrong, stay on the doctor. Keep having him checked until you are confident he is ok or until you have found the answer. Prayers for you and Tibbe!

Glad Tibbe's back home!

I quit using Heartgard.... I didn't like the way my dogs were acting after getting it. One thing I really hate about it is the dose is for 1-25 pounds, if your pup is on the small side, that's a lot of product, when there are others available that have less of a dose, like 1-10 pounds. Peek A Boo used to get hyper, bloodshot eyes, and just not acting right, and it seemed like it was getting worse each time he took the stuff. I think too they can develope a sensitivity to any product over time, so I always watch and evaluate their behavior with anything they get, each time they get it, be it meds, food, treats, grooming products... anything!

Hope Tibbe continues to improve and best of luck with any further testing you decide to do. You did tell the vet he had just had his Heartgard?

I would not use that heartgard. I used Revolution on my dogs last year and had no problems. Of course I am in California and we don't have the real bad bug problems some states have. You have to use what works but I would be very cautiious and read all the reviews before I choose a med. Little Tibbe needs to have his stomach rest from all that and just chill awhile. I am glad he is better. It is scary being at the vet and not at home so I am sure that is why he is acting unlike himself. Yorkies are very smart and perceptive. He wanted to be home with you!

This may be a good time to do it...when symptoms are present.

Ellie took HG twice. She did fine, but she was ever-so-slightly, very unnoticeably off. I prefer milbemycin for her.

Remember, even on the off chance that the test is abnormal, it does not necessarily mean liver shunt.
It may just be MVD or something.

BtW, one of LadyJane's dogs had perfect labs and had a shunt.. It is much more common than people think.

Your description of his symptoms is a concern.

Jeanie I'm so sorry. Just now seeing this. I'm so glad Tibbe is ok!! Hills I/D was a life saver for my Rosie. That's what we use as snacks between her home cooking. I know lots don't like Hills but IMHO the I/D was the best thing for my Rosie when she so desperately needed it.

Yes, I stressed he's just had his Heartgard the afternoon before, his hyper evening and that's one reason they wanted to keep him so long was just to have him under surveillance for a while so they weren't going to call me until just before 7:00 p.m. but I called & they said to come on in. But she said he wasn't toxic from it that she could determine from his vitals and signs and tests. Neuro WNL, etc. and no organs obviously swollen, belly nonswollen or tender, etc. Even though it had been almost 24 hrs. since his dose when I got him in, she just wanted to observe him for a while to see how he behaved. She said he seemed normal while there. Right before I called they fed him and he ate hungrily and wanted more, she said and they watched him for another hour or so after that while I waited there. He had no signs of nausea or diarrhea there but you know how it is, unless he's very, very sick, a dog like Tibbe acts so differently when he's out and about w/lots of excitement going on, etc. But once he was home, he started behaving oddly again. That's when you can see how they really feel - back at home.

He did sleep the night and ate his low fat breakfast this morning, drank and has pee'd. He's had his K-Pectin and his little mustache is covered in that stuff - he hates it and spits half it out before I can get his muzzle up and rub the sides his throat lightly. I give only a little at a time in the side pocket of his mouth to be sure he won't aspirate it so it takes quite a while to get his whole huge 10 ml. dose down. We got to 8 and I stopped for a while and let him rest. Now we need to go wash his face. He's been a good little patient though and won't fight me until that liquid starts to go in his mouth and then he just mostly moves backward and spits.

Hey Jeanie, if you see any of these "not quite himself" symptoms/signs today, break out a video recorder and capture it to show the vet. As you mentioned, he seems to act differently at the vet versus at home. Might help..dunno.

Still praying for that little guy!
