Dear Lord....anyway, she started honking, usually if I cover her nose and that doesn't work, I blow in her nose and that does...it has happened quite a few times, only 3 times where it was really scary and we went to the specialist who said she definitely had it but wasn't real bad...etc., she is 8yrs old and we've always been able to take care of it.

The vet said: Definitely collapsing trachea and asthma attack, combo of the both, have her in oxygen tent, gave some Lasix (xray shwed some fluid) and are going to give her Theopealean (?), she is going to stay for a couple days and I don't know the rest...the ex said to get the specialist back on Monday, so I will, we are going to visit her at 8oclock....I hate this...

Now what I only told the vet and now you here, I had opened the window for Mini to look out and get some fresh air...she loves this, its pretty cold but not freezing so I didn't think it would hurt...I'm thinking this caused it?

When she started honking her legs went splayed out....she has done this, during extreme situations and bath tub.

My question, and it may be stupid, but does Collapsing trachea get worse with age? Shes 8 years old now, also did this asthma attack possibly make it worse? I know theres many threads here about CT but I have ignored them, hoping I didn't need them...My Mini is the world to me, she really is, my heart and I would do anything for her and I do mean anything....wish I could stay all night with her....

Yes, cold air can definitely trigger some throat/breathing issues. And oddly, cold air can stop other similar issues (ie, some people can get a (very terrifying) laryngospasm to stop by opening their freezer and breathing cold air). Do pollens irritate her? Bc that'd obvs be another common trigger.

Yup, it's highly likely that CT would get worse with age. Anytime there is something wrong with a structure in the neck/throat -- all other surrounding structures are affected. This causes an overall weakening and/or inappropriate compensation in surrounding structures bc if one structure isn't right, it affects the whole local working system. Hope that makes sense.

If steroids work for her, I wonder if Temaril P would be an option, esp if she also has pollen issues....?

As Anne suggested, Temeril P might help her..... My George has CT. He was diagnosed in Nov. 2011 when he had preop testing done at Texas A&M. They called me to say that his trachea was profoundly collapsed. I was stunned as he never had the symptoms you so often see with CT. He has been on Temeril P for years for his allergies and we have surmised that it may have been what kept the symptoms down.

I have had a few of these pups and found that different things work for different pups. You just have to experiment with different meds...at least that is what I have found.

Worked all night, just saw post. How scary! Glad she is doing better right now & praying for continued improvement. Havent seen theophylline used much in humans in the last few years, but we used to use it a lot and I still see it on the rare occasion. As for use in CT, I found this quote: Airway dilators such as*theophylline*or terbutaline are controversial as they may dilate lower airways but not the actual trachea. By dilating lower airways, however, the pressure in the chest during inhalation is not as great and the trachea may not collapse as greatly.
As soon as you said theophylline, I thought that was a good idea. Potential side effects: anxiety, tachycardia, hyperactivity, possibly decreased appetite. The levels need to be monitored, also, to maintain a theraputic dose. Keeping you in my prayers!
