| ![]() Last night , i was lying on the bed just surfin on the laptop. Our pup , dusty , was lying 2 ft away , chewing a piece of rawhide chewtoy thing , when all of a sudden she started yelping in pain really loudly for no apparent reason. It sounded like she was being stabbed with a knife. It lasted only about 10 or 15 seconds but my wife and I are panicked cos we have no idea why the pup would've done this. The only thing i can think of is that she , being a pup ,( 1 year old ) maybe chewed something cos we caught her a few times , chewin on things she shouldn't chew , like a tiny piece of coal , a small round christmas tree decoration etc......so maybe a small sharp piece of plastic could've got into her digestive system , or a piece of the rawhide chewtoy went down the wrong way ? Any ideas anyone ? Ps. This is my first post here. Thx in advance. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | ![]() Welcome. It's possible the rawhide jabbed her in the mouth or she swallowed a piece. My vet advises not to give mine rawhide. It can cause too many problems. It's very hard to digest and can cause damage to their digestive track. I know they love it but it's too risky. I hope she is fine now.

| ![]() xray at your vet to ensure shes ok and theres no blockage if she stops drinking or eating....and no rawhide. i use bully sticks and watch mine very closely. when they get smaller i toss them....also baby proofing and removing any items from her reach that may harm her. good luck i hope all is well with dusty.

YT 2000 Club Member | ![]() Maybe he bit his tongue or scraped the insides with the chew toy. I would say if he still seems in pain, take him to the vet. You never know with theses little ones what they can get into sometimes!

| ![]() It sounds like he may have either bit his tongue or lip or a piece of rawhide jabbed his mouth somewhere since he yelped for a few seconds and then stopped. If he doesnt do it again, he's probably fine. If he does it again for no reason, definitely take him in for xrays. Take away the rawhide, that stuff is terrible, especially for smaller dogs. Dogs can't digest it and it can cause serious stomach issues. Get him Bully sticks. They can be fully digested, clean your pups teeth, and he will love it just as much if not more than rawhide. |

| ![]() Thanks everyone !! Really appreciate the speedy response , as i usually frequent music-making forums and waiting for replies is like watching grass grow. Point taken. No more rawhide then , but not sure what " bully sticks " are. Are they an american product ? If so , what would the british equivalent be ? |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | ![]() I would stop giving them rawhide's. I just heard a story yesterday from someone that had to take their dog to the vet due to the dog not being able to go to the bathroom. They did an X-Ray and found that the dog had swallowed a piece of rawhide and it was lodged in the intestine causing a blockage. The pup had to go into emergency surgery to remove the rawhide. The surgery cost about 1300.00 to save the poor little guys life. The owners thankfully did the right thing and the pup is in great shape today. I just can't believe something like that is sold when it might cause so much damage. Hope everything is OK now.

| ![]() If it were me, I would go to the vet and have her mouth/teeth examined. It may be nothing, but better safe than sorry. As for rawhides and bully sticks...I don't give either one as they both can cause obstructions. I don't give any type of edible chews. My pups get the Dura Hard Nylabones...they cannot ingest them or bite pieces off of them.

YT Addict | ![]() My pups must have really hard chompers because I bought the dura hard puppy nylabones and they chewed pieces off the ends. My little guy had some intestinal trouble after chewing on these. Needless to say I threw them in the trash. Then I tried deer antlers. They really don't like them. I'm giving bully sticks a second chance since I was told they are 100 percent digestible. So far so good. I don't let them have them unless I'm with them and they only get them for short periods at a time. When they start biting things or each other that's when they get them. I bought the longer ones so they last longer.

| ![]() I 'm totally paranoid about rawhide and bully sticks, I feel there are too many potential issues with them. We use the Durahard Nylabones. I 've just heard too many scary stories anout rawhide (and bully sticks). Hope your pup is feeling better! |
