				   | Thank you for taking your dog to the Vet. I usually err on the side of being overly cautious especially when dealing with the unknown. Since the ground hog escaped there was no way of determining whether or not it was rabid. I also felt that the mouth area has the potential for carrying bacteria which added to my concern. Plus it must have hurt like heck. I hope that all turns out well for your little hunter.

I know that sounds mean but it strikes me rather odd a vet would say that is all.

Unless my senior mind has taken a complete turn off the track, Ground hogs are mammals......ALL mammals can have/carry rabies....while THAT particular ground hog may not have had rabies dormant in its system, if it does, then it does "carry rabies"....and then it of course, always has the possibility of actually having the disease....You need a new vet! Perhaps an infectious disease specialist from a vet school can enlighten you and/or your vet on rabies and exactly what animals are susceptable to contract/carry that disease! | Hope your Yorkie is feeling better and that the Nor'Easter is not hitting too hard in your area of New Jersey. You have had a lot going on lately!

| Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Glad to hear your kiddo is okay , that's wonderful. It sounds like you have a great relationship with your vet, and that can be rare. I will say it's a bit odd that the vet wasn't concerned about rabies...don't you think that's a little odd? In any case, glad the pup is okay, glad you were able to take her in. I would've been scared right out of my mind. Where did you hear/read that groundhogs can't carry rabies? Bc if that's true, I'd like to learn more about it.

				   | It is also no longer recommended to use peroxide on wounds. It debrides the tissue while it's trying to heal and actually slows down healing.
