Yorkie vs Ground hog Hi my Jack Russell and 4 yr old Yorkie attacked a ground hog. Unfortunately my Yorkie grabbed the ground hog and this morning when I went to check her lip she yelped. I noticed a punture wound in the top inside of the month. I dabbed it with peroxide, but what to use on the wound was thinking of betadyne ? This happened yesterday afternoon, the ground hog escaped hopefully survived. thanks, Mike |
May be best your vet take a look at it. You have to be careful with puncture type wounds because they can easily abcess if they're not kept open and clean and often animals with puncture wounds are put on antibiotics to prevent infection. Poor baby. |
Go to the Vet ASAP! Who knows what junk the ground hog could have had on them! I hope your baby is better soon :) |
I am sorry to hear your Yorkie was bitten. I would bring your dog to a vet to be checked. Is your Yorkie up to date on shots? Woodchucks have been known to carry rabies. Sorry |
Bit by wild animal definitely calls for a vet visit. He may need to be tested for rabies |

Off to the vet. . . . They are rodents |
I spoke to the vet, told me to watch it to see if it doesn't abscess and continue to apply peroxide. Ground hogs don't carry rabbies. |
Rabies!!!!! I would have already had that ground hog at the vet, checking for rabies!!! This is the VERY FIRST THING I thought of! Then I remembered the MOUTH is the filthiest part of the body with more germs per square inch than any other part of the body, including YOUR RECTUM!!!! So, close behind Rabies, comes "infected abcessed puncture wound of the mouth".....I would have this pup at the vet yesterday, he may need IM antibiotics and he needs that wound in his mouth seen! |

From 1990 through 1996, in areas of the country where raccoon rabies was enzootic, woodchucks (groundhogs) accounted for 93% of the 371 cases of rabies among rodents reported to CDC. |
I'd take to a different vet. But that's me. |

Any animal can carry rabies. I would also be careful with the peroxide. It can cause vomiting. |
Animal bites can cause nasty, nasty infections. I agree with the others....vet consult asap. |
I would find a new vet ASAP. Also applying peroxide often will prevent the wound from healing properly, 1 or 2 times when the wound 1st happens is ok but more then that is not beneficial & can cause other problems. |
