| Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | [QUOTE=YorkyKids]Probably a better term to use would have been "aspirin LIKE" ingredient in Pepto-bimol. But the fact is Aspirin and salicylate are very close in make up. I would be willing to bet there are many people who don't know beans about SALICYLATES....but who are very accustomed to the word "ASPIRIN". Aspirin is well known to cause health problems with some humans. Since the word "aspirin" was used here as a "warning".....I don't see the problem. Certainly I don't think such a harsh reprimand was neccessary. I do agree that salicylates can be problematic with canines but not nearly as problematic as in cats. Like everyone else has stated.....it's better to follow the advice of your personnal vet. FYI "Kaopectate" manufactured by Upjohn does NOT contain Salicylates! YES..you are very right....semantics....I did not use the word SALICYLATE because I do not think everyone knows that word and ASPIRIN is commonly known to all. My information did come straight from my vet and I was only passing it on for information,. Sheesh....Sorry to offend anyone/everyone and thank you for clarifying it for me,Yorkie Kids. FYI ALL : I did confirm with the bottle of Kaopectate in hand that it does NOT contain SALICYLATE and also with the Pepto Bismal in hand that it DOES.

I have done just that (used either) and always had great success. Sometimes we get to hung up on one thing when there are many ways to treat a problem and our own way is not the only way.

I was shocked when just a few months ago I was told this information by my new young vet. Since I thought she would know more then I knew I followed her advice. I only passed the informatiion along since it had surprised me. MOST IMPORTANTLY is to consult your own Vet. If it is of interest the question can be asked and their advice should be followed. GOOD GRIEF. When will this end ?

| I do NOT use Pepto for several reason, one of which has nothing to do with the med itself. I cannot STAND the smell. BUT, there are other reasons and I do not like the salycilates in it. The bismuth is heavy metal and although not in the elemental form, I still prefer not using it. AND, Pepto also turns stool black when used for a few days..and in humans, their tongues get black, but that might not apply to other animals. I prefer kaopectate but just because of its simple formula. IF, a puppy/dog needs a quicker diarrhea fix, I use Lomotil or loperamide....I am not recommending that others follow my and my vet's regimen, but wanted topoint out there are several different treatments for the same condition. And, basically, it depends on the preferences of the attending vet.. |
