| Josie is sick My little Josie is sick. When I left this morning she seemed fine. I had a later than normal evening so I ask my x to come and sit with them till I got home. He had to leave about an hour before I got home, but said she was her normal playful self. When I got home she greeted me with her normal fussy self telling me she doesn't like being home alone and wanting to go out. Due to Debby we haven't been able to go out rain and yard is lake front property right now. I notice as I was sitting on the couch she didn't look right in the face. She normally has a long nose and she had the scruthed up nose look. I picked her up and stated examine her and to me she look a little red around one eye and mouth look more puffy on one side. I looked at her teeth they looked normal. I tried to get her to eat and she did eat a few bites of chicken. I made some rice and added the chicken and she wouldn't eat. Jack of course ate all of his. She had a bm and it looked fine. So I went back thinking tooth or could she had fallen. About 30 minutes after the bm she went back to the potty pad and stayed there a little bit longer. I hid till she was done and went and got it quickly. It was a little loose and had a tiny bit of clear mucus with a spec or two of red blood. About20 minutes later she went ba k to pad and had a itsy loose bm and then in another spot mucus with blood again. Due to tropical storm Debby I cannot go out tonight or I would take her to the ER. There are so many roads closed due to flooding. Bad flooding. I also would really prefer my vet unless it did get worse and I would prolly have to paddle there. It very dangerous right now though. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? I might also mentioned Josie and jack have showed some distraught of the recent break up between my x and me. Could this being playing a part of it? I have allowed him to come and visit cause the visit seems to up lift them. Also what to do to keep her from dehydrating? |

| It could be like a stress colitis, which is fairly common and results from any kind of stress or changes in the pup's life. I'm also thinking the redness may be from an insect bite... when flooding occurs bugs tend to head into houses to get out of the water. I'd keep an eye on her gum color (pink, moist gums is good), sticky gums indicate dehydration, and the facial swelling. The lip being swollen may be preventing her from being able to drink effectively. Some water mixed in with her food could help, or offer her ice cubes to lick on.

| Thanks kjc, we are getting dressed taking them with me to work calling vet on the way in. I seen last night on news the intersection to get to vet was closed due to flooding. They do have a sister vet closer to my work if needed. I did notice this morning after looking her over on her gum line maybe around a tooth looks like dark blood. Now I wondering if it the tooth. Or could she had fallen and hit her head. It just seems so odd this all happened in one day. And Josie did have her yearly exam last week, all was good. |

| Just got back from vet. We were there for 2 hours, running test taking blood work, etc. Her blood work was normal, ends up vet believes she was bitten by a spider with the face swell and the red splotches around her arm pits. And since I hadn't changed anything her their diet. She was give a benadryl injection and I was told to give her OTC benadryl for next 5 days, call back if she vomits any more or has lose stool. Her swellen in face has already gone down quit a bit. I have them with me at work today to watch over her the rest of day. Gosh what a scare! |

| I am glad that Josie is Ok. I tell you spiders can hide anywhere and just jump out at you. I am glad the swelling is starting to go down.

| Oh my! I glad you were able to get her seen... I was going to suggest Benedryl, but I wasn't sure... it wouldn't be good if she had fallen due to making them drowsy. Normally I'd have said get to your vet... but thought that would be too dangerous for you! Hope she's feeling better soon!

| Josie update. She still has loose BM's. Not much of any appetite. She did eat alittle bite of chicken from my hand last night. I gave her her med's on a piece of cheese and asfter she tasted that she would not eat nothing else. I did cook some hamburger thinking maybe she would eat that. She ate a few bites and then started hiding the pieces like they were her treats. Anyone got any suggestions of what to feed when they are sick. The vet wanted me to take the food they have that is in the can the RX. But I have had that before with no luck and too me that was a wasted $12.00 I sure my Jo-Jo gets better soon, I hate to see her like this. Last edited by Gatord; 06-28-2012 at 05:54 AM. | I always use the prescription foods when my pups have GI issues. Either Hills I/D or Purina E/N I prefer the E/N and my pups like it and tolerate it well.

| You can use a 50/50 mix of plain chicken and plain white rice, and/or Gerber's Stage 2 (only, no dinners) chicken baby food for a few days, then start to mix in her regular food.
