Well, Tibbe ate all the food I left down for him last night before going to bed sometime after I went to sleep! I had measured out 4 1/2 tablespoons of kibble & added about 1/4 cup of water last evening & he ate a small portion of that earlier in th evening & I put the remainder in the fridge to keep from spoiling but took it out before bedtime - just in case his blood sugar would drop or he'd get hungry. He did! I never did give him his Pepcid yesterday as he had his Cerenia for nausea on board & was sleeping so much. This morning he's bright-eyed & bushy tailed & seems back to the 95% status! When you look at him, he's not glazed over looking like he's been seemingly since he started the Pepcid AC 20 mg., 1/4 every 12 hours. That Pepcid AC I buy is a tiny pill & he only gets 1/4 of that - a very tiny little bit. And, boy, it seems to have stopped his reflux/belching/burping with the after swallowing/licking that goes along plus no reverse sneezing, but oh, it seems to turn him into a zombie when he's on it. Hopefully, today's dose will not hit him so hard. I'm thinking of maybe giving him 1/8th of a pill but will ask the vet first. Had normal BM last night & this a.m. & no vomiting/spit-up/reverse sneezing, ears/tail up, frisky. Hopefully, he'll keep getting better from here. He's looking at me in that way he does when he wants me to do something for him - I think he's getting hungry. Hope so! |
I'm glad he's doing better... I do know that just eating a ton of kibble followed by a lot of water can mess up any dog's digestion. The kibble is dry, so it will absorb fluids from the intestines, then when a bunch of water is added, it can swell to 2-3 times it's normal size. So he may have had a mix of too wet and too dry kibble trying to get through his system, and trouble digesting it all, which could cause excess gas and belching. Just having too much in his tummy could cause the reflux and inappetance. I've seen this happen when big dogs get into a bag of food, they eat till they can't eat anymore, and with the dry kibble, it makes them thirsty so they drink a ton of water. It can also cause them to bloat. |
So happy to hear Tibbe did well today.:) |
Tibbe refused his food this morning & when I got back from PT, there were small spots of mucous diarrhea throughout the living room & a fairly normal stool in the bedroom. So unlike Tibbe! He's totally housetrained & clean in the house. He's also been scratching a lot since being on the Royal Canin though he has no fleas at all. Back to the vet we went - saw a different one this time. Everything once again all WNL & the stool sample I took in showed nothing besides some tiny bit of mucous. Vet thinks it could be the small amount of pizza he snapped out of my fingers yesterday when he was refusing his food & I was testing him to see if he would show interest in bread or anything besides his kibble. I held a bit of cold pizza toward his mouth with my fingers over the end of it & somehow that dog still got by my fingers as he jumped & grabbed a bit of pizza within my hand B4 I know it! I didn't see his BM last night to see if he had any diarrhea then but he had no watery/gassy sounds in his gut last night, unlike today. The vet said that bit of pizza on top of his already unhappy gut could have caused the mucous bits in the stool. No definitive diagnosis given. So, we were sent home with some more Hill's GI I/D to mix with RC GI & to change to eventually since he seemed to do better on that can of Hill's ID we tried last week & I was told to restart his Pepcid AC once every 12 hours for a few days. (I'd kept him off it x2 days as it made him so sleepy & food-resistant). Within 20 minutes of giving him the Pepcid, he's sound asleep. I hope he does as well on the Hill's this week as he did last week. If so, we're staying on it for a while. |
I sure hope your little guy recovers from this quickly and I will say a prayer for that! I hope there is good news tomorrow! |
I'm hopeful tomorrow is a better day! He's sleeping like he was given morphine or something. That Pepcid just knocks him right out for hours. It's kind of scary. I was just wondering if a BAT might be useful. All his regular liver studies and his 2 recent CBC's, chemistries, whatever all they do are all WNL as was his CPL. If this gassy tummy, refusing food, some diarrhea keeps up, should I ask for BAT? Not one of the four different vets who have seen him has mentioned doing that test. |

That's funny that not one vet suggested doing a BAT. Usually they want to do it no matter what symptoms are showing. |
They may have done it, going to have to get out my file & check. Emergency vet x-rayed him from head to toe when his problems first started on 5-23-12 & did all the bloodwork about 12 hours later when I took him back in to ER & all WNL, said get a CPL if he continues to have any problems since a high lipase was his only high value. He said all other liver studies WNL & he said "I was particularly looking for liver values". Did stool/urine also. Then 6-8-12, his regular vet did CPL & another CBC, differential & one other test - forget what that was, plus another fecal. Then yesterday, another fecal done. I've got to get out my billings & look to see if BAT done. |
How is Tibbe today? |
He ate his Hill's I/D which I missed with his RC GI kibble but he seems to be sleeping a lot. Hopefully, it is the Pepcid AC causing it. No more mucous in his stool. Just waiting & watching, hoping he starts actually being himself soon. |
Poor little guy! I sure hope he's recovered and back to himself soon. I've given pepcid AC to my dogs a time or two, but can't remember if they acted tired from it. |
We were back to the vet again this evening. Tibbe started scooting on his behind this morning once & then did it again when I called him to come into the den. He actually stopped on his way to scoot/scratch his bottom on the floor & then finished coming into the den. So off we went to the vet again. Vet said his anal sacs were quite full, expresse them & cleansed his rear end very well. I wonder if they have been bothering him and that's another reason he's been so inactive, though tonight, he did seem to perk up after that treatment. Had a good dinner, drank his water, normal pottying & such. He's cuddled with me now on his back watching Mothra - that old Japanese horror movie from years back. So silly but its so campy I cannot help watching it! I hope tomorrow he's perky again & hope it was those anals maybe making him mopey these last few days. With all the vet visits he's had lately, you would think one of them would have picked that up!!! We've been to the vet 4 times since 6-8-12. |
Our lil Tibbe has to be better soon! Love that face, can I have an 8x11 or your avatar? :) |
How is Mr. Tibbe doing today? I hope he has a great Saturday!:) |
