| My Sophie Fell Every night my 2 yorkies curl up on my husband's lap and sleep. On Monday, my smallest yorkie Sophie stood up and then fell off his lap. I don't know if she lost her footing or what, but she just fell off into the floor. I jumped up and ran to her and she was laying there with her tongue stuck out and not moving. I panicked and picked her up and placed her on my husband's lap and she still wasn't moving and her tongue was still sticking out. After about 2 minutes, she started moving a little more and she started gagging and then she threw up. We raced her to our pet emergency clinic and on the way she was doing a weird thing with her breathing, but by the time we got her to the emergency clinic, she had pepped up more, but was still shaking. They checked her vitals and her pupils and said she seemed to be fine and they did an x ray which didn't show any broken bones. Although they said you could not x ray and tell anything about the head. The ER vet said she probably had a mild concussion because she threw up. Yesterday, she seemed completely fine, but I decided to take her into her regular vet just to give me peace of mind. He checked her pupils and her vitals again and said she was just fine. However, he noticed that when shy licks that she only licks to the left. (out of the left side of her mouth) I hadn't noticed this before and he hadn't either. (he has seen her either weekly or bi-weekly for the past year due to her having Demodex, so he knows her very well) He got some meat tasing stuff in a syringe and placed it on her mouth and she wouldn't lick to the right. She does have a really crooked tooth on the right and we don't know if she has trained herself not to lick that way or what, but we both found it to be concerning. My vet is now wondering if she may have had someting go on that made her fall off in the first place. For now, he just wants us to watch her for anything strange. Hopefully, she has always done this and we just hadn't noticed it before. She is such a tiny little thing (2 1/2 pounds) and she is 16 months old. She thinks she is a big dog, but she seems so fragile to her mommy Anybody have any experience with their dog only licking to one side and not the other? |

| Wow this is very scarey! She really is a tini-tiny girl but hopefully she is tough and nothing more will come of this. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Poor little thing. Kudos to you for getting her to the ER vet immediately. Are you noticing anything else going on with her mouth such as a drooping or only chewing on one side? Focal hemiparesis can be a sign of a post concussive syndrome. It could also be a symptom of a stroke that may have contributed to the original fall. If your vet has concerns he could refer you to a veterinary neurologist for some follow up tests. I had a Golden Retriever that had a stroke , she was about 12 at the time. Her most pronounced symptom was a drooping eye and cheek. It did improve some what over time without treatment.

| Thanks for the responses! I haven't noticed anything at all "different" with her since her fall with the exception of her licking on only one side. She is eating as much as ever and drinking as much also. She is her normal self today running around the house like she owns the place. LOL I just never really paid attention to how she was licking or chewing before. She does have a snaggle tooth as we call it where her fang tooth on that side turns out. I am hoping that her tooth has made her train herself to lick the way she does and that she has always done this and nothing more will come of it. We are lucky in that we live right across the street from our vet's office and if something else comes up, we can be there in a minute, but our ER vet is 20 minutes away. My vet told us to watch her for anything that isn't normal and he will test her further if need be. |

| Ok, this makes me crazy. In my opinion this pup should have been put on an anti-inflammatory to be on the safe side. This pup is clearly having some negative brain activity, weather it was there before the fall or after the fall either way it's not a good thing. I would seriously sugest a visit to a neurologist ASAP. These symptoms are indicative to head trauma and are a danger sign. I will be praying for your baby. | Thanks everyone for your responses, advice and prayers. She is on an anti-inflammatory. I forgot to add that. She is on Mobic. It was given to us by the ER vet. They gave her a 5 pound dose at the ER and then told us to give her a 3 pound dose a day after that. |

| Does the second vet you took her to know she is on Mobic? Anti-inflammatories cause increased risk of stroke. If stroke is suspected, anti-inflammatories should not be used unless bleed versus clot has been ruled out (at least that is what we do in human med). I would call the 2nd vet and make sure he/she wants the Mobic continued w the possible neurologic finding of the one-sided tongue licking.

| Wow! I am glad I posted on here. I called my vet and he said for her not to take the Mobic. He said it has to be metabolized (?sp) and he doesn't want her to take it. He was not happy that they had given her such a large dose in the ER, but in any event, he wants her to be off of it. He is going to recheck her back just to make sure everything is ok with her. My husband says he always remembers her licking from the left. Weird how I didn't pay any attention to something like that though. I am not going to take any chances though and if he wants to send her to a neuro vet, we will definately go. I don't know why I failed to mention that the ER had put her on this med to my regular vet, but the ER vet told me it was safe ("like Tylenol for us" is what she said) I guess that is why I didn't think anything about it. URGH!!! |
