My understanding is that a true fig tree is poisonous, while the common ficus is not -- our trees don't produce fruit. The vet yesterday said a ficus leaf can cause GI upset, and I have read sources that say indoor ficus trees can be a respiratory irritant to humans :confused:. We have had the same trees for 35 years. Although I'm pretty sure that the ficus was not the cause of Max's problem, I would still recommend caution to anyone with dogs and houseplants.
To everyone's relief, I'm always quiet, too, when I have a sore throat. Tell Mr. Max we said to get well soon, so he can bark and boss his brother around.:)

Just seeing this! Oh poor Maxman! I'm glad he's feeling better. How irritating it must be to him. Sending quick healing vibes!

Poor Ashley! Do you recall Lisa if she had medicine that finally ended the coughing? I'm sure you were very concerned like I am. It is very disconcerting to see them gagging or coughing and worrying that they are choking.

Her trachea got badly irritated, and I was afraid that she was not going to survive it with the amount of coughing and struggling to breathe. She initially had a cortisone shot and chinese herbs,, and they helped but not enough. Once her doctor came back from China and was able to treat her, he put her on a prescription cough medication. I believe he gave her hydrocodone, and it worked immediately to break the cycle of coughing. I can check to make sure if you need me to. I can't bring myself to throw anything of hers away. As she got older, Ashley had collapsing trachea, but this was the only time that I was really frightened from it. I hope Max gets better soon, It breaks my heart when they are sick.

Poor Ashley. What a terrible time for her regular doctor to be away.

Max has not been coughing, just swallowing hard. Tonight he had a crazy sneezing fit, only 3 sneezes, but they seemed quite violent. He shook his head really hard and startled me. We'll see how he is doing in the morning and decide if we need to bring him to our regular vet.

Once in the spring quite a few years ago, my pup was out running through the new spring grass. He was just a pup and the grass was taller than he was. We came in the house and he began sneezing, and this went on for over a week and through two vet visits. I called them headbanger sneezes bc they were so violent he would bang his nose on the floor each time. Plus I kept finding puddles of clear mucus on the floor where he laid.

Finally, I waited till right after a sneezing fit, grabbed a flashlight and looked up his nose. I saw a tiny green dot right in the middle of his right nostril. I grabbed a pair of tweezers and got hold of the thing and began pulling it out very gently. Seven inches later the thing unfurled and I was holding a piece of new spring grass!

There were no teeth marks on it so I figured as he was running around, a piece must have shot up his nose, or he ate it and vomited and that's how it got there. IDK, but he was fine afterwards.

Hope Max is doing better.:D

Just seeing this. So glad that Max is doing better. That had to have been very scary. Tell Max that he's not allowed to scare mommy like this!! Sendi.g prayers that he continues to feel pnetter quickly. Hugs.

Kathy, I read your grass in the nose story earlier when I searched for sneezing on YT. Although the doc looked in Max's nose, I got out a pen flashlight to look again to see if the sneezing may have moved something.

I do think the sneezing changed something because Max exercised his voice a couple times in the last hour and didn't do any head bobbing/hard swallowing afterwards. He also hit a higher note and didn't sound quite as raspy.

This happened to Daisy last year. She was sneeezing violently and not stopping. I picked her up to rush her to the emergency vet and DH spotted something green sticking out of her nose. It was a huge piece of grass about 4 inches long and really thick. He pulled it out and she was fine. I had seen her eating grass right before the sneezing started. It about scared the life out of me.
