| Once they have had HGE, they are also more likely to have it again. Ginger had it about a year ago. Fortunately, not since but the vet told me to watch for symptoms. Most importantly is to seek treatment immediately. As soon as I saw blood in her stool, I went straight in. It's really scary.

| Daisy was on treats also. She was on Cesars steak treats I think. I stopped giving them to her about the end of december when I started reading up on food allergies. Daisy had three cases of HGE since February 2011. She had one then and then one the first week of december and one the first week of january. I completely stopped giving her the purina food the second week of december when she was not getting better and then stopped the hills prescription i/d after the third HGE episode. Now IAMs catfish and potato and nothing else. Does anyone know how many bowel movements a day yorkies are supposed to have? She used to have three to four and now it is one to two. Not sure if its the food switch, medicines shes on, or blockage (or a combination of everything???). |

and Bear too! ♥ Donating Member | Mine usually have 2 bm's a day. It's probably because of the better food and maybe the meds. It sounds normal to me. How old is she?

| She is a year and seven months and weighs about 3.5 pounds. She had the first HGE at 7 months old. I contacted the breeder she told me to switch food and never responded back. My friend just purchased two yorkies from the lady and they have had stomach issues since about the day he got them. They keep getting parasites in their stomach I believe. |

and Bear too! ♥ Donating Member | That's terrible. I would not recommend her to anyone. She's a tiny girl. Has your vet done fecal tests to check for bacteria? My Lab had this and the test showed that he had Clostridium.

| I think so I will have to go back and look at her records. I know she has had blood work done, xrays, barium xray, surgery, tested for addisons, giardia, pancreatis and a million other things. When they did the exploratory surgery they said her intestintes didnt seem to be that inflammed and unsure if it is diffenetly HGE at this point. They took a bioposy and were going to send it out to determine if she has IBD, but havent done that yet. Since she burps and sounds as if she is swallowing vomit all the time, I fear that taking her off reglan would cause her to vomit. I suggested the food allergy idea to the vet she didnt seem to think that was it, but with all the tests coming back negative I dont know what else to do at this point. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My Cali had 2 bouts of it about 2 years ago. The first bout was severe and she had to go to the vets every day for 3 or 4 days. I took her in the morning and picked her up at night. The second bout was a couple of months later and I caught it just as it started and she only needed 1 visit to the vet and medicine and hydration. Cali has always had a sensitive tummy but after that I became very strict with their food and treats. They get the same food and 2 types of treats only. I also stopped giving them the cow hooves they loved to chew on and that seemed to stop her tummy problems. I just started giving them Zukes dental type chews. I gave them all one about 3 weeks ago and they all tolerated it so I gave them another one last night. I would love for them to be able to have different chews as they love them and their good for their teeth but I can't risk the HGE again. I hope your baby gets better soon.

| I lost "my lil friend" Bunkey (age 9yrs,weight 4.5lbs,poodle) this way. His symptoms started in Sept of 2010,he got over it pretty quickly with meds. Next bout was Oct,then one in Nov. We did every blood test you can imagine and xrays. He was fine until Jan 2011,got over that quickly too. Then in March he had a seizure,my vet ran blood tests the next morning again, put him back on meds,I fed only Chic n Rice that I made when he was sick. That night about 11pm he was having a snack with his brothers,he siezed and continued to sieze (the ER is 20min away). They were able to stablize him,but he had had a stroke. The bloodwork came back at my vets at 7am,I was picking him up at the ER to take him to our vet. At 9am March 9th 2011 Bunkey was gone over the rainbow bridge. My heart hurts for you so much. I know that you want to fix this for your baby and I pray that you can find a specialest that can help. Bunkey's liver enzymes were off the chart they were so high. This had not ever shown up in any previous bloodwork. I dont know if it was his food,he had been so sensative to different foods. None of my poodles can tolerate fish of any kind, not even if it is an Omega 3 added to kibble, they are all brothers. Bunkey was my vets first patient when he opened his office and the man was as upset as I was. I will keep you both in my prayers and hope to hear only good news. |

| I just feel horrible having to wait so long to see if the food she is on is helping. I read an article that said like 26 percent of dogs show signs of improvement in the first 21 days. I think shes on 20 days and shes nonly vomited three times in 20 days (i think thats because of the reglan) but she is still burping and vomiting a little in her mouth and her bowel movements are still soft and larger then normal (not sure if this is because of the canned food?). But I dont know how to tell if any of this is signs of improvement or not. I feel like its not and unsure of how much longer I have to wait to try her on a new food.... |

| So Ive been doing more research since Daisy vomited this weekend after I tried giving her a hair cut and she tried vomiting yesterday but couldnt get anything to come up. Shes also had loose BMs. I talked to her vet about it and she suggested up the reglan and if that does not work then giving her a medication (it started with c but I cant recall the name) thats used usually for cats (i guess its supposed to help do something in her lower gi tract). She also suggested trying to give her a tiny bit of nonscented vasoline (just incase it is hair in her stomach she said that it would coat the hair and help move it out of her gi tract). I kinda feel uncomfortable doing this because Im not sure how much to give her (she said small amount on the tip of my finger). Does anyone know the safest way to do this? Also was researaching and come across articles on candida overgrowth could cause a lot of the same symptoms. Just wondering what anyones thoughts are on that?? She is constantly licking herself. She also licks herself after she uses the bathroom and urinates small amounts frequently throughout the day (I thought it was because she wanted a treat, but since im no longer giving her treats and she still does this). As you can see Im trying to rule out every possible thing that could cause her to be sick. |
