Ellie could use your thoughts and prayers This morning, Ellie somehow severely injured her neck. She was not playing with our other dog at the time and she was not dropped. I wasn't even home. We have no idea how it happened. She is screaming when put in certain positions, shaking, laying on her belly and not moving, etc. On palpation, her vet isolated the problem to the right side of her neck. There are a few possibilities. The best case scenario is a muscle injury of some type. It is possible that she has something growing in her spine. It is also very possible that it is IVDD (she already has it in her lumbar-sacral spine). It doesn't appear that she has any neurological deficit; however, with the drug she was given it would be impossible to assess right now. She was barely moving before, and now with the drug she isn't moving at all. At times (although in all other ways perfectly medically stable), she looks like she isn't going to make it. We are devastated. Hoping that it is just some benign pain or something that will heal in a few weeks, but in reality it may not. Her vet told me that because we don't know what it is, she may get better and she may...not. We are considering a neurology consult. Trying to find the best in the area, etc. Going through to surgery is highly unlikely, however. So there may or may not be a point in finding one. Cervical spine IVDD can be managed medically before trying anything invasive in some (non or mostly non neuro) cases. AAI has crossed my mind, but she is 10 with no past neck issues. We are just hoping she doesn't paralyze. If she isn't walking much by tomorrow, we'll probably go to the neuro to see what they have to say. Thoughts and prayers would be very much appreciated. |
My heart dropped when I saw the thread title. :( I don't even know what to say... I can't imagine how devastating this is to you right now. All I know is that she has the best possible care possible and probably the best mommy in the world! She is very lucky to have you, and all the amazing medical staff you have around you. I just know you will do what is best/right by her. I have no comforting words, I know nothing can make it easier, and I have no advice or experience, but I really am praying hard for Ellie. I hope it's something that can be fixed! |
I am so sorry to read this Crystal. Ellie May has been such a little fighter. We will be praying this can be medically managed and that she will have much more time w you. Our thoughts are prayers are w you and Ellie. |
Thanks, Brit. We are best buds. I'm trying to stay strong which..isn't working. Just trying to find a neuro that I want her to see. I dunno anymore. I just want her to be better. |
Oh no! Sending our best wishes that it's nothing serious & Ellie makes a full recovery from whatever it is. How scary for you to come home and find her like that. Can't even imagine the panic you must have felt. |

Thank God somebody was here watching her. I was actually shadowing and she brought her to me. The only thing that could have happened is she jumped off a chair wrong. Didn't scream or anything, but don't know what else it would have been. |
Poor Ellie, that girl is a fighter and I pray that it is just muscle pain and the meds get her better. You are her best advocate Crystal and I know you will do what is best for her always. Praying hard for it to just be a sprain. |
How very scary and I'm so sorry to see this news about Ellie. I'll certainly say a prayer for her and for you. *HUG* |
Crystal, my heart goes out to you. Sending prayers for Ellie and you. She does have a wonderful mommy and the best care in the world. I can only begin to imagine how hard this is for you. |
I'm sorry Crystal I'm so sorry to read this, Crystal. I know Ellie May has had the very best of care with you through the years and I know how much she means to you. Sending prayers that she will improve and be back to herself. |
Crystal I am stunned beyond words. Hugs to you and Ellie May. I hope the neurologist will find out what is going on and that there is a way to fix it. Huge Hugs to you. |
Crystal, I'm so sorry to hear about Ellie May. I pray that a neurologist can get to the bottom of this and provide some relief to her quickly. |

Oh Crystal I am so sorry! Ellie is in all my prayers and good thoughts. She looks like an angel in her blankie. Im praying it is just bruised or something minor. |
I opened this thread and my heart just fell and tears...oh the tears. I know that screaming sound from neck pain and how it brings you to your knees. Crystal, do try to stay positive and you will find some answers. She has you and she is in good hands. Bless you both. Sending prayers for Ellie's healing and recovery. |

Just seeing this now. I am so sorry to hear this. I hope Ellie gets better soon. |
I will keep you both in my prayers. We feel so helpless when our babies are hurting. |
That's a sweet pic of Ellie May. |
She is the same as she was a few hours ago. Just drugged up. At least it has taken some of the pain away. No idea how to get pills down her throat tonight. Gabapentin is huge and can't be split. I'm not even sure she will swallow it at all. |
Oh I am so so sorry. She will be in my prayers for sure. Would a child's neck brace help any? I use one on Suki just to stop her from biting herself, just a thought. Hoping and praying for a full, and speedy recovery |
