I would think it would be up to you if your dog is in the hospital where she is checked on or not. If you are willing to pay the fee to have her watched overnight, I would not see why they would not place her there. However, maybe it is different in the UK that it is here in the US.

I would be livid if I were you too about my dog being left alone all night. I'm sorry I don't have any more advice.

Whether or not an xray needs to be done bad enough to sedate is only a decision that a competent vet should be making.

Thank you for this advice. I assume you agree with how I see it, as well? I have calmed down and now feel guilty and ashamed for all I have put my poor husband through today. As he said, this is so not like me - I have been worried for too long, I guess. Other things are happening in my life which are also causing great stress so I guess this is why I totally 'lost it'. I will make another judgement tomorrow. It is good to know that I am within my rights to change vets mid way through treatment. The problem is finding another one.

Do vets in the US leave animals alone overnight if they seem to be fine? I bet they don't! Thanks again. xx

Thanks so much for this reply. It is a relief to know you would be angry too. As I said to EllieMay I am feeling bad about my behaviour today and have managed to calm down. I will see how things are tomorrow and make a judgement then. It is so scary. xxx

Yes, "some" vets in the US leave animals unattended overnight. It is generally considered ridiculous to do so by dog lovers. However, vets are in a spot with how much owners can afford and such, so it's not something I totally blame them for.

Animals are transported to the ER (for observation) when vets leave at night and the owner (or vet) doesn't want the animal to be alone. This is done by the owner (so you know it got done). All that said, after a major surgery and/or when there is an IV going, my dog would be transferred. I would not allow them to stay alone. I think medically it's a bad decision to do so.

Aw, thank you so much for your caring reply. Tootsy is doing well at present. I am more myself now - I found it all so terribly stressful and upsetting. The worst part was not feeling I could trust the vet to do the right thing and not knowing what to do or where else to go, having already tried so many other vets in our town! I was on a 'knife edge' for so long, terrified that I was going to lose her. Eventually I fell apart, I am ashamed to say, but it's over now and all that matters is that our precious baby is doing well.

I agree with you totally. What made me flip was that we were told she was going to be supervised, and then they felt it wasn't necessary! What angers me is that, firstly, the pain killers may not have been sufficient, she may have vomited, had diarrharea and would have been left in that state all night! What about urine, do they lie in that all night or are they diapered? What if the line had tangled from the drip ...etc etc. It doesn't bear thinking about!

Thank you very much for all your help throughout this awful ordeal. It meant so much to me as you, obvously, know way more about all this than I do. Tootsy is doing well, so far. I am keeping a close eye on her. Now the search resumes for a good vet and a hospital that I can trust to care for my baby the way I want her to be cared for, during an illness or surgery.
