Yes, "some" vets in the US leave animals unattended overnight. It is generally considered ridiculous to do so by dog lovers. However, vets are in a spot with how much owners can afford and such, so it's not something I totally blame them for.
Animals are transported to the ER (for observation) when vets leave at night and the owner (or vet) doesn't want the animal to be alone. This is done by the owner (so you know it got done). All that said, after a major surgery and/or when there is an IV going, my dog would be transferred. I would not allow them to stay alone. I think medically it's a bad decision to do so.
