Ok this is beyond gross!!!!

Last week i took Jersey to the vet had some kind of bite that was infected on his side. I thought maybe spider or bee, Doc put him on antibiotic for 7 days. It looked better not infected looking anymore but not healed. I took him back today because it looked like a big mosquito bite with a pin hole that was getting bigger. Doc shaved the area and said it was live larva under the skin:eek: OMG poor baby has a creature living under his skin, so gross I could vomit. He couldn't remove it today because Jersey ate this AM and he needs to put him under. Monday AM the procedure will be done. I am so grossed out but feel so bad for Jersey. Wish me luck getting through this weekend and on Mondayi

I was going to suggest that was what it was when I saw your other thread~ I wish I would have now  I had a similar experience with a schnauzer about 20 years ago!

really what happened with yours. I cannot tell you how grossed out I am for him and me. I could kick myself for feeding him before he left. If he didn't eat it could have been removed today

CouversMom 08-13-2011 06:32 AM

What type of larvae is is?? Gross... How does that happen?! Geez, poor Jersey.

I don't know what kind. Doc said it's happens in horses a lot but he does see it in dogs, he mentioned horse fly and some other things but to tell you the truth I couldn't hear what he was saying I was so grossed out.
My pups lead a pretty sheltered life, he goes out to potty and a run around the yard but that's it. He is never outside for long periods of time.We do have a lot of critters that go through the yard too!

We thought it was a bite too. The vets did not put him under though~ it was removed then and there in the office but I think maybe now they know more of the dangers of not removing the entire larvae.

When Fritz had it, it was a botfly caught from being near wild rabbits apparently. The flies lay their eggs beneath the skin f the "host":eek:

yorkietalkjilly 08-13-2011 06:39 AM

Oh, that is awful! Your poor baby. I hope the procedure goes seamlessly and critter-free, he does fine.

Can you not find someone to remove it today? It seems cruel to have him wait out the weekend if not needed :( Possibly a different vet?

I didn't even give that a thought. I am so afraid to go to a different vet.

That same thing happened to Maddie a few years ago, but the vet just used a pointy hemostat and pulled it right out. Then, just last week, my sister took her dog to the vet and same thing! Her vet also removed it on the spot. It's a bot fly larvae. I thought the fly had to lay an egg on the animal, but my sister was told they can lay their eggs anywhere and if the dog or human comes in contact with it and the egg just implants on them. Gross indeed. I totally freaked when Maddie had hers. If I remember right, it happens more in hot, humid weather. Good luck with little Jersey and I hope Monday comes quickly for you and you can have this all behind you!

I would look for a reputable vet or Animal Hospital in your area if it were me. Those things are very dangerous!

Poor Jersey! Wishing him well with the procedure. Sending curses for that critter that dared to implant itself on your cutie. :(

Ringo1 08-13-2011 07:19 AM

I hope you are able to get it out on Monday! I'm sure you are totally grossed out!

When I was younger, my little Maltese puppy got worms and I did NOT want him sleeping in my bed until we got rid of those. I really didn't even want to pet him and I remember my mother saying "Well, they aren't coming out of his head."

I'm very squeamish so I'd be in a hurry to get that thing outta there!

*****Update*****

I just talked to Laurie and she is taking Jersey to a different vet. She loves her vet as she's had him for years, but he's older so she called the vet that she had do Bri's spay and they said they can probably do it with a local to numb the area. So she's rushing him there now. As soon as I know more I'll post another update. I feel so bad for her and poor little Jersey Boy! I'm so grossed out for her!!! Please, pray that they can get it taken care of today for them.

BabyGirl Rosie 08-13-2011 07:35 AM

Oh my!! I have never heard of this! Poor Jersey! :( Glad she is getting him taken care of today. Keep us posted. Sending hugs and prayers.

That is very good news

I will check back to see how Jersey is doing

IsabelleOllie 08-13-2011 08:11 AM

Poor Jersey! I hope they get it out today, it must be so uncomfortable. I remember when I was a kid our female yorkie had a bot fly larva in her back, it opened up and you could see "something" was in there. I was there when it was removed in the exam room - a disgusting image that I will never get out of my mind. Our vet at the time thought that it must have happened from visiting my grandparents who lived down the road from a dairy farm.

111lily222 08-13-2011 08:27 AM

Oh no! I have never heard of this. It would gross me out also. Poor Jersey :(hopefully they can get it out today.

I hope the vet can help Jersey using just the local. Sending good thoughts and prayers to Jersey! Feel better soon!!!

Perrella 08-13-2011 09:22 AM

Yeah gross...I have seen this or something similar.

We had a cat years ago the lost hair around a spot that looked like a small hole, and when DH put pressure around it, a worm head popped up, when you would release, it would go back in.

It was worbal, livestock like cows and such get them. It was really disgusting.

Vet took it out and meds and she was fine.

Ahis_Mama 08-13-2011 09:52 AM

ooh nasty! I hope Jersey can get that taken out of him today. Prayers that it all goes smoothly.
