| New baby yorkie sick, please help. Hi, i am a new parent of a beautiful parti colored yorkie at 3 months weighing a whopping 1lb 6oz. My little boy Gizmo has been with us for a little over a week, but on the second night he started to cough, wheeze, and gag. We just moved into a new apartment and was building furniture while he was sleeping in his crate, and he started to cough and wheeze. Thought it couldve been just some irritant like dust from the windows being open and stuff but it has been a week and 3 different medications. We went to the vet and was prescribed clavomax, and then with no help cephalexin, and now with a combination of a parasite in his stool he has to take 3 meds 2x a day. Besides the coughing, wheezing and gagging, the vet says he is very healthy..hard to believe when i hear his cough and it hurts me so much to hear him like this. My apartment is half carpeted with a high pile rug and his symptoms are more severe on the rug then off. On the rug he coughs like every 15 minutes, in his crate about every 30-45 minutes. Ive been trying to figure out if it is allergies to the carpet or is it just the chemicals in the brand new carpeting, or is it kennel cough, or the parasites he has. Please chime in you yorkie veterans, im worried about my little boy and dont know what to do... thank you in advance. |

| What did the vet say was causing the coughing? Did he tell you anything?

| I wouldn't think it's parasites causing these symptoms. Kennel cough is a possibility, especially if the pup has just received a vaccine for this. Just going by your post, I would think it's more to do with new carpet, though. Here's some info you might want to look at. http://watoxics.org/files/carpet-fact-sheet Keeping in mind that a pup has its nose close to the floor and are always sniffing around and it's easy to see how the carpet could be the cause. Your post says that it's worse on the carpet than off so that might be your answer.

| I would love to advise you but fortunately none of mine have been sick. If the vet can't decide what it is you may need a second opinion. To me is sounds like it could be the carpet. I am sure there is someone on here that can help you. I will pray that your baby will feel better soon.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Did the vet think he had kennel cough? When I got Cali she had it and gave it to my other dog and they both coughed for 3 months. Does he show any other signs of allergies while on the rug like scratching? I hope he feels better soon.

| On the carpet he shakes and scratches sometimes but it just seems like he's being a dog. He loves to dig his face into it, thinking if it was bothering him he wouldn't do that. The doc hasn't said anything yet might go for a second opinion soon. |

| I think I would go for a second opinion, especially as little as he is. My Gidget recently had a terrible cough that lasted for 2 months. Had Clavamox and Delsym, then Baytril, Tussagon, and children's claritin. My vet eventually thought it was an infection (possibly kennel cough) w an allergy component. The coughing sounded like she was dying from the heaving. The Delsyn and the Tussagon were cough suppressants. The Baytril is another antibiotic. Claritin for the allergy part. Wish you well.

Did you take him to the vet right away after you got him from his breeder?

We got him from a friend who owns a pet store, who just received him a week before from the breeder. I know if I choose the pup I would've went straight to the breeder but, I checked online and searched for the breeders name and information, not much good news popped up. A lot of violations and bad reviews, pretty sure it was a puppy mill and not a real breeder. I hope all the best as of right now I've kepted him in the crate the whole day and let him out to play, a little sneezing and gagging but I guess that's the meds working. He's in a more playful mood today, we gotta wait till Saturday for the second opinion, hopefully from a more competent vet. Thanks for all the advices guys, glad I found this site and I will keep you guys updated on my little guy | |

| So i got a second opinion on sat and right when I walked into the office the doc told me it was kennel cough. Gave me some meds cleaned out his ears and clipped his nails for me and I was on my way. The nerve of the other vet, couldn't even tell me he had kennel cough. So Gizmo seems to be getting better, down to 1 med for now and hopefully he'll be 100% soon thanks for all the support |

| Glad to hear you found a Vet that can disgnose and provide answers. Best of luck for your pup, but it would have helped if you did your research before buying a pup. Many people make that mistake. Sounds like you learned a valuable lesson. Best of luck |
