| Shellie - I've been reading your story and updates since day one. I've been praying double time for you and your girls with everyone else here. I truly believe that with all of us doing this, our Lord heard us loud and clear and am so glad both of your babies are home with you now. Please continue the updates until they are both back to their "normal" selves....Vicki, Tiki and Niki |

| Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am glad they are both home and hope they make a full and quick recovery back to their usual selves. You're a great Mom to get them both in so quickly. I agree when it doubt to the vet immediately.

| Tibbe was given Xylitol without my even knowing it was bad! Today I found a bottle of dog breath spray that I had completely forgotten about, called Petrodex Breath Spray, manufactured and distributed in the U. S. by Virbac AH, Inc., listed in Fort Worth, Texas. Because of this thread, I immediately read the label - Xylitol is listed! This company has a location in Canada for distribution there. It is sold to help cleaning teeth and gums, bad breath control, fighting bacteria causing plaque and soothing irritated gums. Directions are to use this spray 3-4 times daily on the teeth, gums and mouth. The Xylitol is listed right after purified water and glycerin as an "other ingredient" in the stuff and not an active ingredient so probably the dosage a dog gets is probably very small - but so is my Tibbe! The same dosage is recommended for all sized dogs. I had bought this stuff about 1 1/2years back from a Dallas dog boutique to supplement his tooth brushing but it is now going in the trash! Thankfully, Tibbe hasn't had any of this for many months as somehow it got pushed way back to the back of the shelf and I had forgotten about it. Tibbe gets almost daily tooth brushings and that plus the spraying, too, was not pupular so I stopped using it. I don't know if there was enough in the dosage(had used 1/3 of the bottle so far) to hurt Tibbe but thank goodness now he will never be given it or anything else containing Xylitol because of Shellie sharing her story. Tibbe had a full normal physical and lab check-up with his dental cleaning in January but with his coming June recheck, we will repeat all tests with this history. I am keeping up the praying and good wishes for all 3 of you girls, Shellie. Much love from a grateful Yorkie lover. Jeanie

| Luv my 7 Furkids Donating Member | Heres another good one, we cleaned yards today, hubby mowed and I pulled weeds. I have a fenced in area for the dogs to go one the grass. Well I found a wad of chewed up gum. Who knows if it was sugarless or not. I think a crow may have dropped it over our yard (no kids in my yard). Needless to say I had gum all over my hands trying to get every speck out. After hearing Shelly's story Im not taking any chances. |

| Update Dear Ones, It has been nearly a week since I’ve been able to relax and finally take a deep breath, and really BREATHE. I finally am able to relax and I can truly feel the tiredness and fatigue that has permeated my being. Lately I have been on adrenalin 24/7. Again, Words cannot express just how much your support has meant to me. Without you all being there for me and praying and just wishing us well, I don’t know how I would have gotten through this nightmare. I am blessed to have you all in my life. Many blessings to you all, and all those you love. The Yorkietalk Community is a MIRACLE!!!! Such loving angelic souls. Again, I am blessed to have you all in my life. A humble Thank You-to all the Yorkietalk Angels!!! Happily it seems that our seemingly endless nightmare is coming to an end (fingers crossed :-) ) |

| Update ![]() Dear Ones, It has been nearly a week since I’ve been able to relax and finally take a deep breath, and really BREATHE. Happily it seems that our seemingly endless nightmare is coming to an end (fingers crossed :-) ) Today, as I wrote before, Cassie was not eating, and Muffin was being finicky with food too. I have been carrying Cassie around with me everywhere, and watching her every breath as she slept in my bed. By this morning, I was exhausted. But I still needed to talk to the ER and my Vet. I spoke to the ER and they told me to bring her in for a check up, so they could check her breathing, and they also suggested I pick up a few cans of AD Dog Food, as she was eating that there. I was grateful she was eating anything, so I took her in and they checked her breathing and they say she is relaxed and breathing just fine. I don’t usually feed regular dog food, as I really don’t like what’s in it, but I do I usually feed Honest Kitchen (made with human grade food) with a sprinkle of cheese and some desiccated liver powder, or a tiny amount of turkey gravy, but they weren’t having any of it. So I felt for now, I’ll do anything as long as they start eating. Bottom line, they told me to start of with a tiny bit. Like at teaspoon (as a tablespoon is like a regular meal for them). I came home and gave Cassie a teaspoon and she ate about a half of teaspoon off of my fingertips. Believe it or not, I am thrilled. Muffin also showed an interest in the AD food so I allowed her to lick out Cassie’s bowl and I will be feeding them both the AD in about an hour or so. My Vet called back and suggested not to worry and give it 36 to 48 hours till they are back to normal. She also suggested I give them what the ER had been feeding and gave me further instructions on administering the various homeopathic and Bach remedies she gave me for the girls. Their schedule is a bit complex so I worked up a chart with who gets what at what time a day and how many times a day or week. Just got back from the ER and going to the Petsmart for my dad’s Parrot and everyone is resting comfortably after our visit to the ER and Petstore and after a few nibbles of AD food and a drink. So all is quiet on the Western Front, as they say. Muffy is acting more and more like her devilish self. Cassie is still subdued but is also showing a few little signs that she is starting to get back to herself. She seems more alert and interested in what is going on around her. She wants to lick me a lot. She even barked when someone was at the door. I am grateful to God and all of you and your prayers. Finally, I know that I don’t have to say this to any of you on this thread, as you know the horror of what went on here. But I must stress this to ALL dog people, and even more to small dog pet parents: Xylitol is so toxic, so poisonous to dogs, that a microscopic amount, unable to be seen by the human eye, can be enough to KILL a small dog. QUICKLY. Two small little cupcakes baked with xylitol killed a 65 lb dog!!!!! Pet parents be warned: I do not want any other pet parents to go through the nightmare that I went through. It’s enough to put us humans in the hospital, that is how stressful this episode was. If in doubt about ANYTHING RUSH YOUR BABY TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY THIS IS WHAT SAVED CASSIE AND MUFFIN-DO NOT WAIT FOR SYMPTOMS!!!!!!!!!! CHECK ALL LABELS OF ANYTHING YOU GIVE YOUR BABIES, WHETHER FORMULATED FOR PEOPLE OR DOGS. IF IT HAS XYLITOL IN IT-THROW IT OUT AND NEVER BY ANYTHING WITH XYLITOL AGAIN IF YOU HAVE DOGS IN THE HOUSE. Much love to all my angels Shellie, Cassie and Muffy Last edited by broodizt; 04-30-2011 at 04:31 PM. |

| Correction: I meant to say "never BUY anything with Xylitol again" not "by" LOL. PS Forgive me, sorry for the partial double post. I'm not running on all cylinders lately (LOL). Love, Shellie |

| Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am so thrilled both girls are improving. I am using their story to alert all my friends and family of the dangers of Xylitol. I hope you can relax and get a good nights sleep.

| We are so happy for you over here. Not only have you saved your dogs' lives but you have also saved the lives of many other dogs. Kudos to you for being such a proactive, loving, unconditional Mom and for teaching us what to and what not to do.

| UPDATE Cassie ate another half teaspoon of AD. Muffin at first refused her AD and walked away. But after seeing Cassie lapping it off my fingers, well this was not going to get by Muffy (LOL). She then proceeded to lap up AD off my fingers as Cassie did, and then finished the rest of the teaspoon from the bowl. (LOL). There's such competition between sisters :-) We're making progress. I'll feed them in another hour. |
