he's getting "better" because the steroids are building up in his system. The fact that you noticed he was getting better after you started the holistic meds is just a coincidence.

Can you tell us the names of the holistic meds you are giving him along with the steroids? I would be interested in checking them out.

OP, you have received so much great information from some knowledgable people on YT.

I usually do not comment on threads like this, because my lack of medical knowledge. But, what is obvious to me is that you are in a huge state of denial about Polo. Your descriptions of his physical behavior have been giving me nightmares because of his obvious distress.

Please do what is the right thing for him. I will continue praying for both Polo and you.

I have been through what you are going through now. I know you are confused and scared. Brooke was falling over, had a head tilt, walking drunk, etc. Then we took her to a local neurologist and they did an MRI and spinal tap, diagnosed the GME and started her on steroids. When I got her back home, she was walking straighter and her head tilt was gone and I thought they might have misdiagnosed her but it was just the steroids taking the inflammation in her brain down, it wasn't doing anything for the GME, it was still there. I know the diagnosis is scary and you don't know what to do but don't be in denial. He is not getting better, he is just holding his own, the GME is still there and will come out in the form of a relapse if you don't get the correct steroid dosing and start on the other drugs for GME. Again, I beg you to join the New GME Dogs yahoo group so you can learn about GME, it's symptoms and the drugs you need to get your baby well for good, not just for a few days. I have a holistic vet for Brooke also, but the holistic vet is there for acupuncture & support of Brooke's other organs, not to treat her GME, GME is treated by an experienced neurologist!! I am not here to judge, I am here to help you and Polo with my experience. Let me help you.

I have already joined the GME yahoo group about a week ago. He had a spinal tap done and it came back clear. The neurologist said that in some cases 20% don't show in the spinal tap, So it is about 80% chance that it is not gme. When you got the spinal tap done for brooke could the neurologist tell it was gme with the fluid from the spinal tap?

I believe you are misunderstanding this. Just because 20% of the time the test does not show GME does not mean that there is a 80% chance it is not GME. It simply means that sometimes the diagnosis cannot be made by the spinal alone. Normally, from what I understand, the MRI and spinal are done at the same time.

I think the neurologist meant that 20% of dogs with GME who have a spinal tap done get negative results even though the dog does indeed have GME. They get a false negative. So just because the test came back negative doesn't guarantee Polo doesn't have GME. That is why the MRI is so important here.

What a touching post. Sounds like someone the OP should be listening to; someone who has been down that road and willing to share her knowledge and experience.

It is sad how many Puppies have these serious illnesses and the heartbreak for the caretakers. I am sending out prayers for all. God bless and protect all the sick little furbabies and strengthen and support their caretakers.
