Oh bless you for keeping her!!!!!! I am unsure of her outcome if you would have given her back to the breeder. You are good people!

I am so sorry that it has come to this; but it is something that can be surgically repaired. I hope all goes well with the neurologist appointment on Monday.
I will keep her and you and your husband in my thoughts and prayers. You are wonderful and loving people to keep her and make sure she is cared for.
There is a group on Yahoo for AAI. I don't have the link, but will PM one of the members here who had a pup with AAI. I am sure she will be contacting you.

I am very sorry to hear about little Princess. I am a member of the yahoo AAI support group Ladyjane referred to. The address is AtlantoaxialInstabilitypups@yahoogroups.com
I will sent a message to the group to welcome you. You will need the support. All of us have different aai stories and different outcomes. I will be up front and say i am the only one in the group that lost an aai baby. Last year in recovery surgery. If you read my story please know Ellie had a severe AAI diagnosis and serious neoro issues. But she was here for a purpose. The other ladies in the group have various successes and struggles. This can certainly be repaired by surgery. I am encouraged you said she had a small separation between C1 and C2. My Ellie was almost detatched. There is also a conservative option with AAI- the possibility of fushion by cast or strong neck brace. Your nuero surgeon will certainly help you through what your baby needs. Extremely important to have a expert at this surgery. It is very very serious. And the recovery takes a while. But can be all successful. It would be my advice to keep her crated and still until you have your appt. You do not want more separation on her spine. Is she on prednizone already? I know you feel bad making her stay confined but try as much as you can. She is very fragile and uncomfortable. You are doing everything right and being a good mother. A wise friend said to me you will learn how to take care of her and teach her how to get thru this- but you are really going to learn from her! You will see how strong your Princess can be and you will be amazed at her yorkietude.
Yes- the surgery is highly expensive. Apply now for CareCredit if you need. I personally received not a dime back from Ellie's breeder. We will be here for you to encourage you thru this so please keep us posted. I will let the group know now about Princes. JamieV has a great AAI puppy story and she lives outside of San Diego. So you are on the same time zone and may answer to you the quickest. Please join the group and you will all get thru this before long. Sherryl

I agree, it would be a very good idea to put the link in the library. I am sorry you lost your baby, but you are a good person to help others in need with this problem. I do believe there is a plan for each of us & these sick little ones. Even when their lives are short they still give us so much joy in that little time and are such an inspiration to us all. Kind of telling us that we must NEVER give up on life & enjoy every moment we have.
RIP Ellie

As someone else has said, you need to contact the breeder & see if they will return your money to put towards her medical. If the breeder gives you trouble I believe California has puppy lemon laws. I'm happy to hear that you are keeping her as the breeder would most likely put her down.

Well, Princess Chloe's vet called and gave us the results of the Xrays. The radiologist said that their is a small separation between Princess's C1 and C2 which is seen in animals with AAI. The vet was recommending lots of rest and anti-inflamatory medication, the problem is because Princess Chloe is so small, she has these meds. give her diarrhea and I know her body can't take more of the diarrhea. I'm keeping her on bland food and Bil Jac's
small breed puppy dry food, and holding off on her regular Royal Canine puppy dry food. She doesn't care for the ID can food or the EN gastroenteric can food. I'm just going with what is bland and I can get her to eat.

I made an appointment with a Neuro specialist for Monday afternoon to get a second opinon!

The breeder and I have agreed that if she has a congenital problem within a year that he will take her back and I suppose give us another puppy, but we love her so much and I believe that God put her in our path so we will do all we can do for her even while economically we will have to do without to make sure she receives the best care possible!

Our primary vet wants us to have her confined to her crate, we have a play pen which my husband made for her and in the pen we place her crate/kennel so that she can sleep in it at night and not move around. I've been sleeping in the living room where her pen is, but I'm going to get a baby monitor so I can hear her up stairs if she starts crying from pain and run down and give her the pain medication.

Yesterday and today she has spent most of the time on my lap, and today I was able to give her a bath with Vets Best waterless cat bath, I couldn't find another one so I figure if it's good for cats who lick themselves constantly it wouldn't harm her. I was able to groom her and cut her hair back a bit from her face, rear, feet and paws.

I need some suggestions on bland food, dry or home made, I've done the rice and chicken, ID and En, and as we all know their very picky.

Pls keep her in your prayers, God is good! He's giving me the peace and strenght to do what needs to be done.

Until my next update, thanks you all for your concern, advice and prayers!

Baby Princess (Naomi) Mami to Princess Chloe

PS: Should I let the breeder know???

I am so sorry to hear this about Chloe, I am in the group Sherryl referred you to, I am the mother of Shelby who is a AAI survivor.

The road you are about to travel down is difficult, please expedite the neuro specialist asap. Keep her crated, no jumping, no running, no stairs, treat her like a fragile China doll because right now she is!

Look into acquiring Care Credit to help with the expenses.

I also contacted my breeder who denied it as congenital, but Shelby has several other congenital defects she refused to acknowledge also. My focus needed to be with her and not dealing with denials from her breeder.

We will be able to help you further with support and prayers through the AAI group on Yahoo. There is hope, there is surgical repair, and then there is recovery.

Shelby was 13months when she exhibited her symptoms and we proceeded with surgery immediately, she only weighed 3.5 lbs at that time.

Keeping her in my prayers and praying for you that God gives you strength.

Hi my name is Val and I am the proud mom to Babybear. He is a AAi survivor also. I like Sherryl and Anne is a member of the AAI group on Yahoo. We have a few AAI mom's/dad's in our group that can help with support in this new journey you will be traveling with Princess Chloe. We like the ladies have said have all had different experiances with AAi with different outcomes. And everyone one of us have learned from the other. We know the support that needs to be in place going through this congenital defect.
I am here to say please if your vet has not put Chloe on a steroid ask them to do that. This will help with the inflammation in her neck. And the pain meds are going to make Chloe look and feel better but like my Surgeon told me. This is because the meds are working it is not because the problem has been solved. This defect makes them very fragile. So please treat Chloe like a china doll. That neck is compremised at this time and needs as much protection as possible.
Please PM with your email and I will send you a invite to the AAI group. I see Sherryl has posted the group(thank you sweety). I can send you a invite and you will be able to get right in.
I will be praying for Chloe over the weekend hon.

Thank you all so much for your replies, well wishes, advice and prayers! I am truly grateful for all of your support and insight!

God is so good! This morning I awoke with the thought to post a message on YorkieTalk to contact other members who may have a furbaby with AAI, and when I logged in to my surprise I had two messages (thank you Jamie and Anne and anyone else if I missed your message) from owners with furbabies with AAI. Thank you for the information about the Yahoo group I will be logging into it today to read up on all the information I can learn concerning the care and anything else related to this condition so that I can learn how to take care of Princess Chloe properly.

Forgive me for venting a little here, but yesterday when the vet. called me to give me the results of the radiologist findings, she said that I should keep Princess Chloe calm in her crate/kennel and that she would perscribe some other anti-inflamatory meds. When I pressed her as to the progression of the condition and referral to a neurologist she said, "well I can see your a worrier so I suggest you see this neurologist"???

I was taken back by her attitude and did not challenge her, but did obtain the name of a good neuro for Monday.

I just pray that anyone with a small pet, especially one of our furbabies do not wait if they experience what I'm going through. I believe that the sooner the problem is dealt with the better the outcome.

I thank God for having lead me to YorkieTalk and thank him for all you wonderful people, God Bless you all!!!

That's too bad the vet said that, but I would not dwell on it and just move on to the neurologist. All I can say is, Thank God you are a ""worrrier".

I am happy you will now have the support of others who have been through what you are going through.

Please know that many of us on YT will continue to pray for you and your Chloe. I hope you will continue to update us on her progress.

I have nothing of any substance to add ~ only that I pray for your little Chloe; that she will get the help and medical care that she needs.

Oh, and I am SO GLAD that you are a worrier!

PS: (I could see my vet back home telling me the same thing).
