Default Female Yorkie after Spaying?

Hi everyone,

Earlier today, my 6 month old female yorkie (Ziggy) got spayed. She went in as a normal and energetic yorkie, but she seems very much in pain and under a lot of stress.

We expressed our concerns while we were at the vet. The spaying was finished around 12:30pm and we picked her up around 3:30 pm. She was not kept overnight (I have read that keeping a dog at the vet overnight is typical, but I guess this is not the case for this vet). Her surgery was done via a laser, but there is still an incision.

Anyways, when we went to get her at the vet, she starts SCREAMING. It is not just yelps or wimpers, but actual screams. We are not sure why she is doing this, but it seems to happen at random times, even when she is not being moved or touched. As you can imagine, this worried/upset us, and we had the dr. come in immediately. She said Ziggy was not in pain because they gave her a pain shot at the incision site. To me, it seems like she is in pain, but the doctor made it seem like she was being dramatic.

I guess what I need advice on is whether or not your yorkies were very "vocal" after their surgery. Ziggy has screamed like this before, but it has only happened after our other dog snarled a bit to get her away from her food. I have read through all of the other forums, and also googled this behavior, and I can't find anything about it!

Please reply! I'm very concerned!!

I'm sure Ziggy is sore after her surgery. I wonder if she could have gas pains. I know it's late now but in the morning I would call the vet and maybe try to bring her in just to give you peace of mind. Don't let the vet intimidate you and say that Ziggy is being dramatic. You know your dog better than anyone else. If you think there is a pain issue, the vet should listen to your concerns. I hope Ziggy is feeling better and I send get well wishes to her.

Each pup is different.

One thing is for certain: she will probably be out of sorts for most of tonight and hopefully much better in the morning. I don't like to leave mine overnight because there is no one there. But....after anesthesia they can be very restless and it often makes for a sleepless night for all.

I would be unhappy to hear a pup screaming like that. I agree that the vet should be a bit more sensitive to her and to you. I hope she gave you something to give her for pain at home. The injection she gave probably only lasts for 6-8 hours.

If she did not give you anything for her for pain, call in the morning and insist on it! And, if she is still screaming, I would take her back in to be checked out. Good luck and please let us know how she is tomorrow!

Sorry to hear Ziggy is having a hard time. When my pom was spayed she cried for 2 days. I stayed home from work with her I was so worried. After that she was fine. Like ladyjane said each one tolerates it differently. Most of my others were tired for about 24 hours but then acting much more normal. I would call the vet if she is still screaming in the morning or take her to an er vet if she gets worse tonight. Please let us know how she is doing.

They really are so very different the way they handle their surgeries. My male Ben, was neutered at 3 years old and he cried like a human baby the whole evening after I brought him home, and laid around til the 3rd day. My Candy was spayed early in life and barely slowed down after she came home. I had to keep glued to her to keep her from jumping and running the next day. Spaying normally is the more intense surgery. I had a previous girl, Kate, who had to be carried out to potty for 3 days after her surgery. None of mine spent the night. Instead, they came in early morning, surgery by noon or earlier, and home in the late afternoon.

I've never heard any of mine scream, yelp, bark, cry but not scream. You have to be the judge of what that means. If she only did it before as a way to show she was unhappy about getting snarled at, maybe she is showing you how unhappy she is at the treatment she got/surgery? I would of course watch her closely, check temperature, incision redness/signs of infection. Definately run her back by for a check if you think its needed. They should not even charge for this and it would give you peace of mind at the least and maybe head off a serious problem at most. I never worry about being too careful. anymore. I lost one girl and often wonder if I had been more aggressive with the vet, if I could have saved her. Better to not have that question even hanging in the air.

She is probably fine -- that first day is rough for most. Hopefully tomorrow will be better and then the 3rd day should be almost back to normal.

I am sorry to hear about your little one. When we had our two girls done they both came home after the surgery. Neither one of them showed signs of very much pain. They were up and running around pretty quick. That would scare me if mine was vocal with pain. I pray your little one recoverys quickly.

Princess was just spayed on Monday. Today (Friday) is the first day she has been close to her normal self. She did cry a lot the first few days, tho not scream. She had pain meds for the 3 days following the surgery and they seemed to help her a ton. I found what comforted her a lot was me wrapping her in blankets, or the heating blanket, and rubbing her while talking to her in a soothing voice.
Good luck, and I'll be thinking of you and your baby.

aww poor thing. did they give you take home meds to keep her pain levels managable at home? i sure hope she does better tomorrow. they are just so little and i know it's hard on us moms to see them hurting. it's a pretty basic surgery for vets to do, but at the same time it is invasive surgery and prob. hurts like the dickens even on meds. just give her extra TLC and she should be ok soon. if you are concerned that the vet isn't managing her pain well i would see if you can see another vet for a second opinion just to be sure.

Thank you for all of your support YT community!

Ziggy was put on a 24 hr pain med, and then I continue to give her these pain meds every morning for the next 4 days. When I gave her her medicine this morning, she seems to feel better! This makes me think that the first pain meds were either not given to her by the vet or it failed to take. She seems a lot better this morning! I was up with her the entire night last night making sure she didn't do anything to hurt herself.

She has only screamed once this morning, when my mother picked her up, but she is relaxed around me for the most part.

However, the mischievous little thing now thinks that because she has had to go through this surgery, she can tinkle anywhere she wants now! She was doing so good on the potty training front!!!
