I am so sorry your Tucker had surgery. If he does have pancreatitis....surgery was not necessary....I am so sorry he had to go thru that. For education of others and yourself Regina. Pancratitis is dianosed by blood test and the outward symptoms you described. A complete CBC blood panel will reveal high values which "should" tell the vet exactly what the problem is. Treatment is usually a hospital stay on IV fluids. The cure is withholding all food for 2 to 3 days. And antibotics may also be needed. But the secret to curing pancretitis is to rest the pancretis. Also to prevent a future attack.....I would recomend you watch his diet for fatty foods. All dogs who have had pancretitis should have guarded amounts of fat in their diet to prevent future attacks. Sometimes even one potato chip can bring on another attack. I recomend you feed him ONLY good quality dog food and NO human food at all.....NO rawhide or greenies....and be very selective with doggy treats. Now that he has had one attack....he is subject to have another. Oh and no Royal Canin Yorkie 28.....it's very high in fat! Good luck Regina.....I'm praying for Tucker. If you still have him on the special diet from the vet....that's probably ok. If not you can feed him boiled skinless chicken breast with white rice cooked in the broth. This is gentle to his tummy. <g> Please post about his progress. Regina....I would recomend you find another vet....one who is well versed in toy dogs. I might can help if I know exactly where you are. I'm new here.....just signed on today...but couldn't resist trying to help Tucker......

| What should the fat content not exceed. Bo has pancreatitis and I have a 7 month old which makes it more difficult on treats and their dry food. What would be good for both of them as far as treat? |

I'm not really sure what the fat content should be. I like to keep the kibble at 16% fat....no more! Dogs need some fat as the body converts it to calories thus giving them energy. Pregnant and nursing moms need a higher fat content than adult dogs. But I just don't believe high fat is good for any toy dog even puppies. I limit my puppies to only 16% fat content too. There are some studies that indicate processed fats are hard on the liver and kidneys of dogs and the pancreatis has a really difficult time processing high fatty foods. As for treats....I don't trust ANY commerical treats marketed for our dogs. I look at them as "junk food" but manufactured for our dogs. And I don't think any of them are good for toy dogs period. for treats I use: the hard animal cookies for teething babies (human)....you can get them really cheap by the 2 pound bag at Walmart. can't think of the brand name. Cherrios...these are really great...my dogs love them. saltine crackers......the "no salt" brand. you can buy no salt saltine crackers at your grocery store. raw veggies.....like caulflower, broccalie (sp), green beans, baby carrots. sometimes "no salt" canned green beans. And many people with liver or kidney compromised dogs used canned prescription Hill's Science Diet K/d or L/d for treats. Slice the canned food into about 3/8 inch slices. Place on a cookie sheet and bake in a low temp oven until hard. I think about 275 for maybe an hour. Break into 4 pieces and give for a treat. You must keep them in the refrigator. Dogs love them. But all treats are fed in moderation.....I want them to eat their KIBBLE....and not depend on getting treats for a meal. I give no more than two small treats a DAY. Altho I know many people fight this on an ongoing basis.....we have never had any digestive problems here....not even one time....and my dogs range in size from 1 pound 7 ozs (yes she's an adult) to 3 and 4 pounds to 7 pounds....hope this helps......

| Tucker has been back home now for 2 days. He's seems to be doing okay...no vomiting. He has in incision on his tummy now so we have to be very careful. Poor baby, he loves to play and can't really since it hurts and he's trying to heal. He has been on a special diet since we've gotten him home and he has to stay on that for 3 weeks. He seems to like the food so I'm thinking we may just keep him on that for a while. I still can't believe this happened to him as we watch him closely. I am guessing that the treats had something to do with it, but I can't be sure. I just hope it doesn't happen again. Thank you all for your help, concerns & prayers. I really appreciate it! Regina |

| I am so glad I found this site. I took my Sampson to the vet this morning. He too has pancreatitus. This will be his third time at the hospital. I try to be so careful with his diet but any little thing just might set off another round. The vet said Yorkies might just be prone to getting pancreatitus. Please say a little prayer for us. | Update - It has been a few months since Tucker was in the hospital with pancreatitus. I was convinced that he was going to be sick forever and that he would eventually die from this. To my surprise, he is feeling much better. He's actually gaining a little bit of weight now. We have been feeding him Science Diet for Sensitive Stomach and it seems to be working. I do feel bad since I took away all of his treats and chew bones, but I would much rather for him to be healthy. Don't give up hope with Sampson. We will keep him in our prayers. |

| sorry it took so long to get back....Sampson is home and back to himself again. Whew, I am watching his diet closely, very closely. Poor little fella, I hate leaving him at the vet, but all is well now. I have been checking the fat content of everything he eats, (dry dog food, treats ect)

| Questions need advice... I know this is long, but I'm getting more and more worried everyday! Just when I think I have things figured out, it goes right down the drain... I realize that it's been a month since everyone has been discussing this, but I just found the thread, in hopes of finding an answer about my little girl, Spice. Since we got her, she has had spells of vomitting. Lately though it seems to be getting worse. About 2-3 weeks ago I had bloodwork done trying to figure this out. Her ALT was slightly high, but the Vet said that it could be caused from growing bones. Bloodwork will be redone in 4-6 weeks. Her only symptoms are vomitting, usually at night. She'll sometimes vomit food and sometimes just bile. Usually vomits 3-5 times, until stomach is empty, and then goes on her way. Sometimes she acts sickly after vomiting and other times just fine. If she throws up more than 2-3 times that's when she acts sick...shaking, weak, etc. If this happens, I feed her a small amount of boiled chicken to get something in her and not let the acid in her belly make things worse. She always seems better after that. I have been keeping a log of her eating habits, vomiting, etc for 2-3 weeks now. It seems that she vomits every 2-5 days, usually at night. She gets treats almost everyday for clicker training and if anyone if familiar with this method, you know that they get many treats. I make them as small as possible. She used to just get hotdog pieces, but I have recently switched to Bil-Jac Gooberlicious and Liver Treats. She had been throwing up the hotdogs, so I thought I had figured out the problem. Last night, after no training yesterday and no treats what-so-ever, she when through the same thing again! So, now I'm back at square one. If anyone has advice for me as well, I would greatly appreciate it. For those of you with dogs who had/have pacreatitis, can you please describe your dogs symptoms. My vet doesn't seem to think that's what it is, since she isn't showing other signs. Thank you in advance, Nicole
