HELP!!! Advice needed do not trust emergency vet!

Acetaminophen is a medication commonly used to alleviate fever and pain. Common brands include Tylenol®, Percoset®, aspirin free Excedrin® and various sinus, cold and flu medications. Dogs most commonly receive toxic amounts of acetaminophen because owners medicate them without consulting a veterinarian. They also consume tablets that are dropped on the floor or left lying around.

Dogs are less sensitive to acetaminophen than cats. For example, a 50 pound dog would need to ingest over seven 500 mg tablets in order to suffer toxic effects. In the cat, one 250 mg acetaminophen tablet could be fatal.

In addition to severe liver failure, acetaminophen causes damage to red blood cells.

In all of my life, I've never used it. I would be afraid to. If someone gave it to a liver-compromised dog and didn't know they had liver problems yet, it could be fatal.

You said his walking is worse... is it only the back leg or does he appear drunk or wobbly, are his legs moving in the correct sequence? If it's not just his rear leg, all else I mentioned are signs of head trauma and he will need a steroid shot to control the inflammation.

Sorry to hear Bruce fell of the bed. When Pixie walked off my bed because Nikki scared her I took her to the Er vet. She wouldn't use her back leg and would fall over occssionally. I didn't like him and he seemed so rough with his exam, so I took her home and went back after the shift change for a second opinion and an Xray. She had LP. They gave her Medacam for pain. I would call and ask for the vet on duty and take him back in. I hope Bruce is just sore and will feel better soon.

What you are describing is a concussion. It's quite possible it might not have presented with any symptoms during the initial exam.

At this point, it's extremely important that Bruce be seen again, so that he can be evaluated for increasing intercranial pressure and treated appropriately.

Part of the problem with tylenol is that the different preparations carry different dosages. The infant drops contain 80 mg/ 0.8 ml (or 100 mg/ 1 ml). The children's formula is 80 mg/2.5 ml (or 32 mg/ml). It's very easy for people to miss-dose their dog.

Well we finally heard from our regular vet. Bruce does get up and walk with a regular gate, he follows his commands, but is slow and sort of achey and he has been eating and drinking normally. The vet does not think that he has a concussion, because I saw the fall and he did not hit his head at all. She thinks he may have a strain from sticking his legs out to break his fall but because he can support his weight when forced she does not think it is emergent. I took his temperature and it was normal and his pupils have normal reactivity to light.

We are going to keep him quiet and see the vet at 7:00 a.m., but she did give her home phone if there is a change. I feel awful this is my fault, I should not have resisted getting up when he nudged me. I love this little guy more than anything! I feel like the worst parent ever. I cannot believe I would let him fall. Sleeping bag on the floor tonight, shopping for a lower bed tommorow!

Do you have any epsom salts ? if so , you can give him a soak in that. I use the kit sink and 1/4 cup of salts and soak for as long as they will stand still.

Prayers for your little Bruce. Don't blame yourself....these things do sometimes happen. It happened to one of my pups in 2004. He ultimately did end up needing surgery because he had herniated two cervical discs when it happened....the symptoms did not show up until days after the fall. After that, I put my mattress on the floor for many years!
Hopefully nothing serious will crop up with Bruce. Just keep an eye on him.

just read some of the earlier post... sorry I guess I just had a panic reaction!!!

There was a lot of good information give (if I had read first awwww)
But I am still very afraid of Tylenol after my zoie died, I also had a teen-aged daughter who had to have her stomach pumped because she had a really bad headache and od on Tylenol. The nurse said it can be very dangerousness to our livers.

I hope Bruce is much better by tomorrow. What about a platform bed? I don't know how comfortable they are though. Let us know how he's doing and what the dr says tomorrow. And, again, you aren't a bad yorkie mom. Things happen. It's just natural to blame ourselves.

I think part of the problem is that he was always used to just me, but I was recently engaged and my fiance moved in this week to save on housing costs for the wedding...Well Bruce and I are now in the guest room and I moved that bed off its frame to the ground. He is limpy on one leg and I am insisting on an X-Ray tommorow! It is very distressing to me, my fiance thinks I am overboard with my panic and chronic worrying, but words cannot describe how much Bruce means to me, I do not love him with all my heart; he is my heart!!!!!
