HELP!!! Advice needed do not trust emergency vet!

This morning Bruce fell out of bed, this was about 2.5 to three feet! He seemed fine but given the force of the fall I rushed him to the emergency vet...Well they told me he was fine and to just let him "walk it off," he seems to be getting worse. The vet assistant there told me I could give him baby tylenol to help with discomfort, that he may have a bruise. Has anyone heard this before? It just did not seem right to me! I cannot get him to the regular vet until tommorow morning and though I left several messages with their emergency line they have not called me back. I feel awful he seems in pain and I do not know what to do! Can you ice a dog's injuries? Any advice is much appreciated!

I'm sorry. How scared you both must have been! Did they do any x-rays? If not, then that should be done, I would think. What do you mean he is getting worse? His walking or what?

His walking is worse but he is lethargic and just lying in his bed. This is very unusual for him. Very unusual.

This morning they did not feel xrays were necessary after palpating and feeling around because then he was walking fine. First thing tommorow we will be waiting at the vet, but I hate to see him in pain and I can just see it in his eyes.

I would not give Tylenol. To the best of my knowledge it is toxic for dogs.

Did he fall on his head? What appears to be hurting?

I am going to assume that his lethargy is a result of hitting his head... Is there another ER you can get too ASAP? If not, go back to that one and insist on seeing another vet or that they treat him for head trauma... do not leave until they treat him. He should have been treated with a steroid injection to prevent swelling inside his head...

NEVER GIVE ANY ANIMAL TYLENOL!

It appears to be his left back hip that is bothering him. This troubles me because he was born with orthopedic problems.

This is all my fault! I should have felt him moving in bed. For years he has slept with me with no problem, none and now this. I believe he tripped on the comforter trying to get down. Now I will likely be sleeping on the floor next to his bed so this does not happen again. I feel horrible I let this happen.

I'm surprised so many of you are against Tylenol. I've heard that baby/children's Tylenol is safe, but you have to be careful about not giving too much. Also make sure there are no other ingrediants, do not give Children''s Cold medicine with Tylenol, that can be deadly, but it's not the tylenol, its the other things. I hope the vet returns your call.

On the other hand, lots of my clients come in and tell me "I gave my dog an ibuprofen last night" and I have only had to treat one or two cases of ulcers and I can't recall a dog dying from this medication, yet.

My personal preference for pain and fever in dogs is aspirin but we do warn our clients to discontinue the medication if the dog stops eating and to call us or come in for a recheck if that happens.

In cats the situation is different. Acetaminophen is very toxic to cats and this medication should simply never be used to treat a cat. Aspirin has a long half life in cats, at least 24 to 48 hours, so it will reach toxic levels pretty quickly if it is given more frequently than once every 48 hours and the dosage is 10mg/lb so a baby aspirin (81mg) is a much more appropriate dosage for a cat than an adult aspirin. I have not seen much information on ibuprofen and cats but it is a good idea to avoid all non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications in cats, at least until one of them does prove to be safe in someone's clinical trials.

P.S. to the previous note. My guess is that the AVMA figures that it is safer not to confuse people with the difference between the effects of acetaminophen in dogs and in cats. I have several pain control references which state that acetaminophen is generally safe in dogs and it is used frequently because hydrocodone/codeine + acetaminophen combinations are pretty effective for post-surgical pain and for chronic pain from arthritis in dogs. The general feeling is the the narcotic provides the pain relief in this combination, though.

I would not give tylenol and I would seek the advice of a different vet and preferably at a specialty center as opposed to a vet with weekend hours or walk-in service.

Is he conscious, aware of his surroundings? If he hurt his hip I would think that would be painful, I don't think it would make him sleepy. And for that kind of pain there are meds available... he should have been xrayed..

he probably has a minor concussion. Daisy fell off the couch when she was a puppy and I brought her to the er and they told me that she had a minor concussion. She was very lethargic and just kinda laid around. They did give her a shot of steroid though.
I really hope your baby is ok. Sending prayers your way.

Is there another ER vet there? That is the very best option; otherwise call the other one and see if there was a shift change. One of the ERs around here is staffed with new grads at times who are absolutely not ready to deal with the things they may see, so it can be difficult. I would be concerned about the lethargy.

The vet this am should have given a pain med instead of letting the assistant tell you to give tylenol. It may not be the most dangerous drug for dogs, but it is far from the safest. I would never give it if actual vet drugs were available. Not a great idea.
