| What Age to Spay? We have an appointment on Nov. 18th to have Muffin spayed. She will be 5 months old on Nov. 17. Our vet told us the best time to spay is between 4 - 6 months. Muffin is 3 pounds and I am SO WORRIED about her having surgery when she's this little. If I wait until the middle of December when she is 6 months old, we'll be right in the throws of the pre-Christmas hustle and bustle. I know that many of you have had your females spayed. Did you wait until they were older than 6 months? I guess there is always a chance that Muffin will go into heat soon and that is why the vet wants it done before that happens. I don't know what to do and I'd appreciate any feedback, especially from the breeders we have on this forum. Thanks for your input! |

| Ruby was 8 months, 3.9lbs when i got her spayed but that's because she went into heat at 6 1/2 months and then false preg so i hade to wait for all the swelling and stuff to go away. With Bella i think i'm going to wait until she is 7 months just so if she needs any teeth pulled i can do it all at once.

| I think she will be just fine. I also believe you are doing the right thing by having it done in Nov. Five months is not too soon. In a few cases, they do go into heat early and you don't want that to happen. That just increases the chance of cancer later in life. There are lots of tiny one's on here that have been spayed and came through it just fine. I certainly understand your worry. It's natural to worry like that. I certainly did. My puppy and I were equally ecstatic to see one another afterwards. Kacee was just spayed on October 21st.

| I talked to my breeder a little while ago and she recommended that I wait just a little longer before having Muffin spayed. She said that way if there are any puppy teeth that haven't fallen out, she can have them pulled at the same time as her spaying. So I changed her appointment for the week after Christmas. Muffin will be 6 1/2 months old instead of 5 months old when she has the surgery. Thanks for your posts. I just love this forum and the wealth of information I get here each and every day. You guys are the BEST! |

| My female was spayed at 6months and she did fine. She was only 4 lbs at the time. She had her retained baby teeth taken out then too.
