Hello Folks,

This is my first post, and I wish that it could be under more pleasant circumstances. I live in Dallas; my ex-wife lives in North Carolina. She called me Sunday to tell me that Chloe had a stroke. Chloe is 14 years old, and has had an excellent health record other than cataracts that she developed about 2 years ago.

Flora took her to a "Vet in a Box," who, after doing an MRI, said that she has had a stroke. Chloe was completely lifeless, not able to stand up or function. Flora took some medications with her and went back home. She was able to get Chloe to drink water, which is a good sign, we are told.

Flora took her to her regular Vet Monday morning. From what Flora tells me, I read that the Vet wanted to put her down, but that Flora was so distraut that he gave her 2-days worth of medicines and sent her back home. Chloe cannot stand up, but will eat and drink, if Flora holds her up.

In the meanwhile, I Googled "Yorkie - Stroke" and found two folks whose 12- and 14-year old Yorkies survived a stroke, after 5-8 weeks of intensive therapy and TLC. These were posted in 2008, so I thought that I would create a new post.

So, I am asking for your experience and advice in this matter. I feel that she should put Chloe down, but I am 1500 miles away, and in no position to make such a decision.

If you have any experience at all with strokes, I would love to hear from you, both your experience and your recommendation, PARTICULARLY ABOUT RECOVERY TIME AND THERAPY.

George ask one of the moderators to move this to Sick and emergency as this fits both criteria. Or you could just create a new thread in Sick and Emergency. Posts there get highlighted attention.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I have not personally dealt with this so other than my compassion to offer you, I have no usefull advice.

I'm so sorry to hear about Chloe's stroke. I don't have any experience dealing with strokes or after-care, but I wanted to offer my thoughts and prayers for the best for Chloe.

I don't have any experience with strokes in dogs but most vets won't suggest euthanizing unless the quality of life is really bad. Since you aren't there to determine just hope your will do the best thing and not let her suffer.

I have never dealt with a stroke in a pup before. I agree with Patti...most vets would not recommend euthanasia unless there really was no hope of a quality of life. I feel terrible for Flora. Making decisions like this for our beloved pups is not an easy thing to do. I think the best you can do is what you are doing...be there for her.

I'm so sorry that you all have to go through this. I've never dealt with one of our dogs having a stroke, but we did have to decided to put to sleep our 15 year old Newfoundland, her eyes told me it was time! I think you have to really ask yourself, the decision I'm making.....is it for me or my furbaby's best future? It's not an easy thing to do! Hugs and prayers coming your way!

I'm so sorry you are going through this...and I do understand...I lost my 14 1/2 year old Yorkie just Oct 16, 2010 to a stroke...I choose to put my girl down, her quality of life was over...she was paralysis...Vet told me she would never stand or walk again...Its was the hardiest decision I ever had to make, broke our hearts...but when I looked into my girls eyes I knew I had to let her go...she lived a charmed life for almost 15 years...she loved me unconditionally and I her.

The others are right...the Vet would not suggest putting her down unless her quality of life was over...I know its hard but you must do whats right for your girl.

George, I am clueless on strokes in Yorkies and hard to answer without seeing the dog. I am pulling for her, and for you. Has she considered a specialist? Our little Yorkie is almost 14, and so far quite active and healthy. Yeah, it will crush you to make that decision.

Thanks, everybody, for your best wishes. Flora did the right thing and put Chloe down, after she got over the initial heartbreak and horror of having to do it. I hinted to her that she might consider taking in the stray orange tabby cat in her apartment complex that she had been feeding, but she said that she had already contacted a Yorkie breeder in Raleigh and was on the list to pick up an 8-week-old female puppy in 4 weeks.

Thank you for letting us know. I know how tough that had to be for her, but I'm glad she is looking for another little yorkie to fill that hole left in her heart.

I am so sorry to hear about Chloe, but it sounds like she absolutely made the right decision. We had to put our beloved Guru to sleep this past summer. He was 17 and we knew it was time, although it still hurts me to think about it. But the best thing you can do to honor a dog who has passed away is to give a home to another lucky little dog. Glad to hear that she is doing just that.
