Betty Boop at ER vet - bloody poop

My wife had begun helping me with feeding the dogs. In the evening, we feed them dry with a little canned and warm water mixed in. She had been stacking the dishes as she carried them. What was happening was that the bottom of one dish was touching the food in the one below it. My habit was to wash out the dishes daily, but not the undersides particularly. So, even though the dish was clean, there was obviously bacteria from the food that had stuck to the bottom of the dish from earlier. So, with the next feeding that bacteria was introduced into the food by stacking the dishes. The result was bloody poop.

Once it dawned on me what was happening, I cleaned all the dishes thoroughly and had my wife quit stacking the dishes. I haven't had a problem since.

I have to suggest that you don't make any drastic changes in her diet until this problem gets resolved, or better yet ask your vet the best way to transition her...

(Bacteria or any intestinal inflamation can cause bleeding/bloody poops.)

Maybe try taking her out on a leash to help control what she puts in her mouth, or clean an area that you can keep free of tasty debri and fence it in. Branches fallen from trees can have molds and fungi on them.

Sure hope she's feeling better....

Thanks for the suggestion. You are right.....I don't need to make any changes right now. Things in the yard are only going to get worse when the leaves and limbs begin falling more. Ugh! The leaves have only turned ever so slightly. The squirrels (tons of them) are knocking the pecans still in the shell to the ground. It's just a mess! I'll have to walk her on a leash until everything stops dropping to the ground, which won't be for some time.

I'm calling the vet today. I'll give him enough time to start his Monday and time to read the fax from the ER vet. I'll let everyone know.

Betty Boop seems to be on the mend! She is acting so much livelier. She ate a lot this morning, but still won't drink much water, which is not like her. She even brought a toy to me to get me to play with her. This makes me feel so much better. Just wish I knew what caused it.

Personally, if it were my pup and I felt uncomfortable with her food, I would change it immediately! I have changed many pups over the years without any issues. Yes, sometimes, they get a few loose stools here and there; but we are talking about a pup who very well might be ill from her food! So...as I said, I would change it now.
I have a lot of pups on this food and they all do well...I take in pups often and don't have the luxury of knowing what they were on previously....do I have problems with feeding them Castor and Pollux? No.

So glad she is feeling much better! My vet tells me I may NEVER know what causes it...they tell me I will just need to watch him like a hawk! I personally think it was something he ate in the yard or maybe a bad batch of food....but, who knows...

Just an FYI, but quite a few years ago, I had a foster dog that had bloody poop and it was caused from hookworms. Not only that, the first treatment didn't get rid of them. She had to be treated three or four times before the hookworms were gone for good.

Great post! That is something sometimes overlooked and yes, those nasty hookworms do cause bloody stools!

Betty Boop is doing great! She is jumping up and bouncing off my leg right now trying to get me to play! I think she has bounced back very quickly. You would never know anything was wrong with her. I'm still giving her the antibiotics and the anti-diarrhea paste.

I am concerned about her having a bowel movement only once since Saturday (8:30 p.m.) and it was a small one. Her vet didn't seem too concerned about it. I asked him if I should continue to give her the anti-diarrhea paste and he said "yes". The ER vet said she's never known it to cause constipation in a dog.

Anyone - What is your opinion on this?

I talked with Betty Boop's vet this afternoon. He said it would be OK to change her over to a new food, but to do it slowly......give her a few small meals each day, instead of 2 larger ones like I do. It seems like there is always some kind of recall going on that makes us doubt what to feed our babies. Darned if you do and darned if you don't.

I just wanted to thank each and every one of you who posted. It sure did help me get through this ordeal with Betty Boop. Such great ideas from everyone!! I'm thinking this "Yorkie family" is the greatest!

It's been 48 hours and she finally POOPED. I think I saw a smidgen of blood, but I'm not going to worry about it. I believe the antibiotics will take care of it. It has already done wonders for her.
