| Bile Acid tests are not reliable if a dog is taking prednisone. Results will always be higher than what would be normal for her. It would be a waste of money to pursue futher testing until she is off the prednisone, and with all things considered, I highly doubt she has a liver problem at all. Dogs with Shunts usually test over 100. Under 100 they may have MVD, and is controlled through diet, and medications, if needed. MVD doesn't make them lethargic or sick. Many show low weight (just look skinny) and may be very picky eaters. I would not get her spayed until all symptoms of False Pregnancy are gone. If dogs are spayed while in FP, there is increased risks of bleeding, and the symptoms will take longer to resolve, by a month or more. Warm compresses on her mammary glands may help her. On ultrasound, most livershunt dogs have smaller than normal livers. Hers appeared normal. Royal Canin is a high protein diet... she may do better on food that is 18% -22% protein. High protein makes the liver work harder. Did the vet find anything in the urine sediment? Normally they look for red and white blood cells, crystals, and casts and they test the urine for other things as well. I would think any stones would have been seen in the ultrasound. Has she been urinating more frequently or straining to urinate? Have you noticed any difference since giving her the Lactulose? Last but not least, be sure her anal glands are not full. This can cause distressing behaviors in dogs. Also make sure any traces of blood are gone from her vulva (from her heat). Is she still swollen? Sometimes hairs can work their way in and cause irritation and even cause a urinary tract infection. You can add some water to her food to increase her intake. A dog in heat can appear to be so different than the dog you knew prior to going into heat. Personality and behavior can change drastically. A False Pregnancy doesn't help matters either, but she will return to her normal self when this all passes. I will warn you about chew type toys/treats... if a dog bites off a chunk that is on the big side, it can be painful as it goes through their system and may take a few days to pass. Large pieces can also cause blockages in these little dogs, and are a choking hazard. And, concerning vaccines... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-overview.html Lepto is not recommended for small breed dogs, and Coronavirus is not a threat to adult dogs, only young puppies. Is she feeling any better yet?

| And the roller coaster went up and down again...I went Tuesday afternoon to get the Baytril, Lactulose and Hills U/D food and started her on it that night. She was feeling much better, up until that point. The next morning (yesterday) I fed her the special diet and gave her the Lactulose. She was feeling AWFUL all day. She wasn't moving much and when she was, she was tilting her head to the side, almost looking like she was straining it, even while sitting down. When she saw that I was getting ready to leave she sat there and whined. She just looked like she was in some sort of pain. So, I took her BACK to the vet. Her regular vet was back, saw and examined her. He says he doesn't agree with his partner on the shunt issue - that her levels were under 100, even while on the meds. Her mouth was totally dry from the Lactulose so he gave her water with a syringe. He told me to take her OFF the Lactulose and OFF the special diet and to give her her regular diet and just the antibiotics. So she came home and slept until time for her dinner. After eating her regular food again last night, she seemed fine (for her since the false pregnancy thing started) again! She was happy, feeling better, going up and down the stairs - the way she was before she started the special diet and Lactulose. She seems fine this a.m. too after eating her regular diet but I just gave her the antibiotic and am curious to see if that affects her. If she "goes down" again shortly, then it may be the antibiotic now. I really appreciate all your comments and concerns and am considering everything and am learning a lot. I am going to have the vet cut out some of those unnecessary shots in the future, and have already bought some Lamb & Rice food which she loves and am going to investigate some other foods that arent' quite so high in the protein. I have never gone through anything like this before and it has been awful! |

| I forgot to mention, with her being on antibiotics, ask your vet about putting her on a probiotic to help restore the natural flora in her gut. It could help her get her appetite back. He probably has Benebac at the office, though you may be able to get it for less at Petsmart. I keep mine on probiotics and digestive enzymes almost all the time. It's good for those with sensitive tummies and helps them to digest their food better. I'm so glad she's feeling a little better. Just getting over the estrus cycle will take time, it can really throw them off. Hormones going haywire, off feed, feeling yucky etc. I think it would be difficult to really access her for any other problems till she recovers from that first. I think my female went close to 3 months before I could say she felt her normal self again. But each cycle since has been easier, now I almost can't tell she coming into heat, except she starts not obeying me and has her own agenda!
