Cry Please Help, Dont Know If I Can Do This Anymore

I love my yorkie to death! I only got her like a little bit more than a month ago.

Well she has ring worm . Ive had her at the vet, and she gave me a topical salf and some shampoo I need to wash her with. I have done this very religously. Well its just getting worse! And when I take her back to the vet she keeps on telling me she is getting better, but she is not. The vet then gave her an injection and followed with another injection a week later. It doesnt seem to be working!!

Me and my mom have been infected, then recovered and today... well both of us are infected again!!! My mom wants to give my baby away. I love her so much, but I also feel helpless now. I wish I could help her...

Please help me to get an solution? I had her at the other vet (only 2 in the country where I live) and due to her getting 2 injections already she doesnt want to treat her!!!!!!

What to do?

This is what I have found....have you tried any of this? Hopefully someone with experience will be here soon! Good luck to you!

Treatment of Ringworm

If no treatment is carried out, ringworm will run it's course in two to four months and the symptoms will resolve themselves. However, treatment is recommended to save your dog from suffering any longer than necessary and to cut down the period of time they are contagious

Griseofulvin

Your vet may prescribe Griseofulvin for your dog. It is an anti fungal drug that is used for dogs with ringworm but it does have some side effects so be sure to consult your vet before giving any medication. Griseofulvin inhibits fungal reproduction.

Shampoos and Dips:
Lime sulfur dips are often recommended

Dips should be given twice a week and can be performed either by your vet or at home. Please be aware that Lime Sulfur will stain clothing and jewelry and will cause temporary yellowing of the dogs hair. It also smells very strongly of rotten eggs. Follow your vets instructions for mixing the dip.

Decontaminate the environment

Use bleach mixed at 1:10 on any surface that you can. It will kill 80% of the spores. Vacuum on a daily basis a dispose of vacuum bags which will contain the spores. Steam cleaning of carpets and furnishings will also kill a large number of the spores.

Don't forget your dogs bedding and kennel. Wash the kennel down with a bleach solution and wash the bedding in very hot water. If your dog is an inside dog confine him to one room of the house.

I feel your pain, believe me. I had a kitten last October that I got from the shelter and he had ringworm. Or rather, was possibly a carrier. Anyway, I also had eight dogs and three other cats that were infected.

I tried spot treating them, but it kept spreading. Then I did my research and asked my vet for the sulphur lyme dip, I finally got ahead of the game. The dip is definitely the most disgusting treatment, but it works! And it works fast! I also wish I had asked my vet for the griseofulvin and had gone to my own doctor and asked for it as well. Both myself and my 85 year old mother who lives with me were infected. Lamisil and Lotromin for athletes foot worked on us, but it does take a while for the lesions to go away. Also, you need to keep them covered with a band-aid, if possible.

I also bought the Sulfinex for my dogs and used that on the lesions. I don't really think I needed it, plus it smells like Pine Sol, which I hate and was a little gritty. It's actually kind of messy. You don't want your dog on furniture after applying it, anyway.

Good luck, I really feel for you. I was beginning to despair, too, that I was going to be cursed with it forever, but the dip really did do the trick!

Thank you all for your replys.

I really sometimes feel I just want to give her away, but then I realise that I love her to bits and that defnitely she will not give up on me so quickly. SOO I need to try and keep on trying cause that is what she will do for me.

Thank you for the good advice, I am going to see if I can get hold of the dip, as we do live in an area that suplys of basicly ANYTHING is basicly none.

I hope it works and promise to keep you guys updated

Welcome to YT!
I see you have been given lots of help and I certainly hope your baby will be better soon.

I saw you live in Muscat, Oman.... I know this sounds silly, but I have a friend there... not somewhere one often comes across! Small world!
Sending you best wishes, I hope your problem is solved very soon.

There is someone on here who has a foster pup with full body ring worm. Maybe you could send her a pm and get some advice from her. Let me see if I can find the thread. BRB.

Well, Im going to try out these. I guess its naturally scary to try out anything especially because she is so small and I love her as my own daughter!

I'm trying to find this link I read that you can treat it with Revolution.

First bath them in medicated shampoo and rinse with vinegar (do not rinse out and let air dry) then you can put that foot cream for athletes feet give Benadryl for the itching. When dried then put the Revolution.

Let us know what you try and how it works out for you and your lil furbaby.

Good Luck!!

What to do?
Why is the vet *not* using Oral medication (ie, pills/meds by mouth) to treat the ringworm? This dog should be on an anti-fungal, such as Diflucan, for 6-8wks (as long as this is an otherwise healthy dog), then they have to reculture the dog to see/prove whether or not the ringworm fungus is still present on the dog.

How does the vet know "she is getting better"? Because ringworm can't be evaluated, after treatment, just by a visual check.

Also, what are these injections?

Default Ringworm

I really feel your pain. I adopted Tia (10 weeks/8 oz) at Easter. She came with giardia, coccidia (spelling?), and ringworm. I have two other dogs and I puppy sit my neighbor's yorkie because she has cancer and has to go for long treatments and sometimes had to stay in the hospital. My husband, my neighbor, and I got ringworm, along with all the dogs. She also shared her little parasites! (Tia had to be quarantined.) I cried alot!!!! My vet said ringworm is internal for dogs so my dogs were put on Itraconazole. I adopted her Easter and we have just been cleared of everything. My neighbor and her dog still shows signs though, but her dog could not take the medication because of her liver problems. This is what I did, which was told to me by the vet and a dog dermatologist. I bathed them every other day with the medicated shampoo (KetoChlor) from the vet. I left the shampoo on them for 10 minutes before I rinsed. I washed my floors every other day also with bleach and washed everything they touched with bleach (including their kennels for 10 minute bleach treatment). Bleach kills it. Since I had to wash everything, I limited the toys, blankets, and pillows they had. I was told not to touch them, so I wore gloves and long clothes at first. I washed my hands so often, they started to swell. They were not allowed to go for walks, touch, or be touched by anybody. They could not share anything (combs, toys, food dishes, beds, etc.) Everything was washed every other day to kill it. The shampoo gave Ally a bad case of dry skin on her neck area that continues to flake. At first we thought it was still ringworm, but it was tested and it isn't. I keep her neck medicated to try to clear it up. I purchased a carpet/furniture shampooer and am continuously cleaning carpet and furniture. (They were not allowed on the carpet, but we could have walked on the floor and carried the spores to the carpet.) The spores can live up to 2 years on carpet, I think. You have to clean everything and keep cleaning to get rid of ringworm. You can spread it throughout the house, so can your puppy. It is really difficult and I hope you don't give up. If I think of anything else I'll let you know. If you need to talk, you can send me a message. I know how difficult it is.

I got Tilly from a breeder in South-Africa. Everything was organised and after research I found out this is really a reputable breeder. The day before Tilly got flown in I spoke to the breeder and she told me about the dry spots on her. She said Tilly already had ringworm and that she got the oral medication in January and February. (8weeks course) But that the ringworm was cured and the hair just needed to grow back.

I flew Tilly in from South-Africa to Oman and took her to the vet to see if all is okay. She told me about the ringworm but said that it is not a good idea to put her on the internal medication again because Tilly is so small (1.6kg's) and has been on the medication before, it might nog be a too good idea for her, although she said that if I demand it she will give it on my own responsibility

We only have 2 vets here and I feel that neither of them really has experience in such small dogs. I am so scared in trusting them to give me medications or stuff for Tilly.

By the way, I realised that the wash the vet prescibed takes away Tilly's appetite completely for almost 3 days. And I have stoped that.

If anyone can maybe ask their vets for some advice I will highly appreciate it. Tilly does not have any health problems. But I am scared of too much chemicals.
