Default Nursing Mama w/ Diarrhea

Hi,
I don't know who else to ask, other than good old fashion experienced yorkie owners! My mama dog delivered this past week on Tues am. She has had diarrhea since 4am Thurs morning. Vet put her on EN Gastro on Friday with powered "flora". And she is still going about every hour or two. She is nursing one great big baby girl. (I lost 3 in three days.) My question is: what else can I do to stop this diarrhea without hurting the pup?

I'm so sorry for your loss of 3 puppies. I hope one of the breeders can answer your question.

Me, too. I just don't know what else to do. I give Mama about six pieces of kibble a few minutes ago and she was right on it. Hopefully it might slow it down some. Baby girl is thriving so far. Her ears came up tonight and she is scooting around the playpen like crazy.

Just PM'd one of the breeders. Maybe will have suggestions for you.

You need to put your girl on a bland diet of Boiled, Boneless, Skinless chicken and steamed white rice. With diarreah this severe, get her back to the vet and get that diarreah stopped, your girl has a danger of becoming dehydrated. Her nursing the pup and the diarreah she is also in danger of eclampsia.

She might have an infection and need an antibiotic.

Had her back to vet on Friday. She is on the chicken and rice. They tested for everything! No infection. She was anemic from the birthing but is "robust" and I continue to check her for any dehydration. Dr. suggested diarrhea was from the afterbirth that the delivering vet gave her. I think I agree??? Never allowed my dogs to have it before and they never had this problem. NOW, last night I mentioned I gave her 6 pieces of kibble. Only very small diarrhea last night. Do you think I should give her more? Could that be slowing it down?

Never re-introduce kibble or regular diet until diarreah is under control. The diarreah occurring 4 days after whelp & ingesting placenta is a bit unusual. Usually happens 24 hours after.......Anemia is pretty common after whelp......it doesn't always happen, but when it does it's usually a low grade.

You can ask your vet about IMODIUM for kids, it is safe as i had used before under my vet recommendation, it is an "opiate" i hope i am writing it right and did not affect the puppies. Had some diarrhea after delivery and it resolved fast with some help from Imodium and rice with chicken.
Do you have any idea of why you lost 3 puppies? was it a normal delivery or a c- section?

Thank you so much for the advice! I still have her on the chicken and rice and will stop the bites of kibble. Back to the delivery... she delivered the first stillborn on Tues am, the second shortly there after, then the mama had trouble with third and I rushed to vet. The third was in birth canal for three hours before delivery ( she is my surviving pup) and the fourth came. I lost number two the day after delivery and number four the following night. I went to two different vets and neither actually gave me any advice on this except to expect losing last pup. She is so rowdy and healthy I'm hoping she survives! Thanks for any help you can give me.

There is a virus that can cause fading puppy syndrome, and can cause miscarriages, or early death on the new born as well as still born. The mother can present diarrhea and stomach upset or not or either, before labor or after . It is a very rare virus but it can happen and usually the only way to diagnose is do a "fresh autopsy" of the dead puppy and look for changes in the brain and organs , but the vet performing such autopsy must be a seasoned experienced one. Pretty much there is nothing one can do and without much explanation one puppy may survive while others may not.
I can not think of the virus name and i may have missed some symptoms on the explanation, but your case makes it come to memory. I hope someone else will read this and think of it. It is devastating to loose puppies withouth explanations, mention it to your vet.
Again, if i am not mistaken, the bitch affected will build immunity against it and can have a very healthy litter next time she is bred, it does not occur 2 times in the same bitch ( but on that part i may be missing a detail) and it does not kill the bitch , although she may need support such as fluids not to become dehydrated and weak. I want to say that if a bitch has had it in the past 6 months, her plasma can help save struggling puppies or the whelped bitch who is nursing struggling puppies suspected to have such virus , but that part i read about a while back. Sorry i could not research it first before posting here i am in middle of work, but look into it and compare the symptoms... i sure hope that is not the case but if it is, the good news is that next time around your momma may have all healthy babies !

When the vet phoned last night, he mentioned the same thing! He didn't go into your details though. Just said that what it could be. Gees, you count all these "pros" to at least mention some of this stuff... She is so much better and baby is good so far. The diarrhea is over as of yesterday and I'm thinking I need to feed her something more. You've helped me so much so far I hate to even ask, but what food would you suggest I start introducing to her? Thank you so much for your help!

I missed some of the response, did not process in my mind... "Gees, you count all these "pros" to at least mention some of this stuff... " what you meant by this?
anyways, to your question that i feel was addressed to me? maybe?
It is great news that she is feeling better and if the puppy is going strong it may have a good chance !
I feed dry kibbles of a premium main brand , i also agree with the holistic foods and i am not against it .
But personally i find that the premium brands that also make prescription diet work better for me. I have used Royal Canin , and for nursing mommies you do puppy kibbles, i think you know that already, and currently i am using ProPlan , the premium natural Turkey formula for puppies, that is what i would try first and see how it goes. Than as a third choice i would do science diet . Royal canin is more "greasy" than the others, good for coat , but a lot of times contribute to soft stools... i do not like that at all, and the proplan usually is very palatable, so they like to eat, i found my mommies produce great amount of milk in it, nice stools and we have many other factors we count , such as not having eclampsya or milk fever ever after switched to this brand ... and a few other important things . That is my experience and sometimes even my vet tells me to go for science diet and i tell him i will keep my ways. The third was my vets recommendation but my dogs do not like it as much and they loose weight on it , so not the best option for me, specially new mommies who get emaciated from nursing big litter anyways ... when you have only one pup you do not need to worry as much.
Fat free cottage cheese in small quantities also help with calcium production and good poop, besides will get her some good bacteria to her GI. no more than a small table spoon a day !
Start mixing a few kibbles at a time ... keep the rice for few more days and hope !
XOXO

This is just what I was looking for, the "tried and true" results! The vet did put us on the Science Diet... just gave her a small amount to see how she does. But like you, I need the best all around result, so I'm wondering if I should start the ProPlan before I go any further. Checked out baby girl this morning, she is getting bigger. My comment referring to the "Pros" was entirely directed at the five vets at this "state of the art" clinic I have been using. Never one word about anything extra for my little mama dog, nor a word when I started losing pups. But when I started to the vet with my mama dog laying across my lap, and was told it would be a drop off and they would see her at 3:30 that afternoon... I'm done with them. This new vet I dropped in on that morning will be the first to say he doesn't really treated "Mamas and Pups" on a regular basis but he did help my dog! So you can see how thankful I am to have found this website and you guys have helped me so much!! I'm thinking it will be good to hang around, maybe in a different section, so I can get a better idea of what I'm doing. Thanks Again!!!

We all here at YT have had good and bad vet experiences. And sometimes a new vet maybe more eager to figure things out than older ones. I started with my vet 10 years ago when he was opening his practice... he was more attentive than, i still love him, he is sharper now... Besides this virus is very rare ... hard to think of it .To be honest i am not even sure how my "automatic pilot" came to work when i read your post ...

Anyways, science diet is good food, keep her on it, you have it on hands... again, one puppy is not that stressful on the mom. Give her the cheese in a couple days, start with little if all is going well... and increase to a table spoon a day . I would not buy another brand right now. less change the better.
And this site has many great advice.. as with everything in life you will see things that are not that great , so disregard and keep what it is good.

Blessings to your mom and baby , it sounds like both will be making it good !
XOXO
