| 9yr old yorkie with diabetes I have a yorkie with diabetes she is always wanting to drink water she can't hold her bladder and we could never get her really house broke we've done diapers for years and since the diabetes started we have to keep her ln a open wire cage. can anyone tell me if they had a dog this way and after the diabetes got under control did the urge for water ease off. Also the vet said today she has both types of diabetes and will probably live maybe 9 mos to 2 years. Also can anyone tell me where I could purchase WD dog food at a reasonable price. Any advice in these areas would be highly appreciated. Thank You in advance Tom |

| diabetic 9 yr old Tom, others on here will be able to help you more as I am new to this diabetic problem. Yes, once on insulin the peeing and excess water drinking resolves. That much I can help you realize, others are better able to go further. W/d is only through vets I think. Norma Jean Last edited by nj234; 06-21-2010 at 10:46 AM. |

| Once she is regulated (are you working with the vet on regulating her? doing blood glucose curves?), her water consumption will normalize. But never withhold water from a diabetic dog, just in case you are unaware of that. Here is a forum for owners with diabetic dogs: A lot more detailed info can be found here: Canine Diabetes

| Oh, dear! Another one! This thread might help you: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ml#post3171249 Here is a link to a great forum. It was my lifeline for the first few years after Lady was diagnosed: Canine Diabetes - All - Canine Diabetes - Message Board This website was my "bible": Pets with Diabetes: Home Page Once you get her regulated her desire for water will go back to normal. As long as she is regulated and kept closely monitored, there is no shortened life expectancy for diabetics. My Lady is 14.5 years old and in her 8th year of diabetes. I was told to expect only two years, too. Canine diabetics, like human diabetics, are prone to infections. Diabetes is hard on the organs, especially the eyes and kidneys. They usually die of secondary conditions due to their weak immune system, not diabetes. Again, prompt veterinary care at the first sign of illness is the key to keeping them healthy. Lady's last bloodwork was perfectly normal, the "bloodwork of a puppy" my vet said. She has dry eye, but no kidney damage or any other organs. |
