My Yorkie Maybe Hurt! :( Please HELP! The other day I was holding my yorkie like normal. He gets kind of dare-devilish and started to climb up my body to sit on my shoulder..which is completely the norm for him. Out of no where he decides to jump of my shoulder! I tried to get ahold of him and even tried to save him by sticking out my back to catch him that way, but couldn't maneuver it just right. He fell right on his back...on concrete. I felt horrible and he yelped so loud it broke my heart. Afterwards, he just seemed like he was a little shook up from it, or maybe sore. So I called the vet and they said that nothing may be wrong with him and just to watch him, but if he acts like something is hurt in the morning bring him in. The next morning he was fine. He was spunky, energetic, running all over the place just like usual. But that night when I got home from work, he acted as if he felt pain. Like the accident just had happened. Yelps when picked up, sat down, or sometimes even touched. He was in his cage the entire time while I was gone. He just wants to lay down now, not even trying to play. Sometimes even whines when he moves a certain way. I've very scared. He's only 12 weeks old. I got him not too long ago and I'm very attached already. What should I do? What may be wrong with him? |
I am sorry your little one got hurt. You should take him in to be looked at. You just never know with these little one. It is better to be safe then sorry. |
Oh I forgot. Welcome to YT. This is the best place to find any information you will ever need on your little one. |

Thank you so much! I figured this would be the best way to get advice rather than googling all the time! LOL :D |
Sorry about your pup, I don't trust mine to let them sit on my shoulders you never know with this little ones, I will take him to vet asap, and at least have some xray done, also, a metal playpen with pads (washables if he destroy the disposable ones) water, food and bed, will be better until he is completely potty train, than be cage, while you are gone, unless the vet tell you that he need to be crate to limit his mobilities, while he is getting better, but you will need him to take him out to potty, jmo:animal-pa ps. Welcome to yt!! :p |
Your vet told you to bring him in if he acted like he was hurt, right? That's what you need to do. It sounds like he is in lots of pain. There is no way anyone here could guess at what his injuries are. He needs a hands on physical and probably Xrays asap. |
I'm so sorry these little ones can be very wiggly. I hope your little one is ok. Welcome, wish you had found us under better circumstances. |
Update Earlier I put my finger underneath I guess his chin and lifted up his face to look at me, and he yelped. Although he's yelped at alot, do you think he could have severely hurt his neck? Another thing is I don't understand how he could have been PERFECTLY FINE this morning. Nothing was wrong. |
I think you should keep him in his crate until you can get him into the vet - and get him in asap. He could have hurt his back, his neck, who knows. Not worth the risk. I would not let him run all around, try to keep him calm and quiet and see your vet. |

how old is your pup? Please take him to the vet asap. Time might be a factor on full recovery. |
*update* This morning, again, I wake up to find he's completely normal. Spunky as all get out. Maybe at night after all day he finally feels the pain? I'm not sure. But we have an appointment first thing Monday morning to find out what's going on. Thank you for all your help! |

He is way too little or young to be allowed to climb and jump off of anything. These does are climbers and seem to have no fear. Many vets advise to never let them jump off of anything because they can injure themselves so easily. They are not cats, so will not land on their feet. Zeke is two and we still have to keep a tight hold of him and try to keep him from climbing too high. |

When he climbs up to "sit on my shoulder," I'm usually sitting down on a couch where he's also sitting on the back of the couch. That day was the first time he climbed up me to sit up there with me standing up. I didn't know how to react, especially, when he was trying to jump off. |
I am glad you have an appointment for Monday morning, I think its best to have him looked at. You know my Sophie Kate used to do the same thing she would climb up me and sit on my shoulder like a parrot (very strange). I had to limit that to when I was sitting down because I was afraid of the same thing that happened to your baby. Someone suggested you limit his activities and keep him in his crate today, I think that is a good idea - keep him calm. Keep us posted on what you find out, I know how horrible you must feel seeing him in pain. |
Good Luck with your baby! I hope you find out he is just fine tomorrow! |

I am not judging you and I don't want people coming on YT for help and getting ripped to shreads, but I stongly advise that maybe you don't allow him to sit up there anymore. Not so safe. Just my opinion. |
Yorkies are fearless little creatures and you have to keep an eye on them bc they will jump from anywhere!! When I see Pixie get some place that is too high I tell her get down and if she doesn't do it I walk over and put her on the floor and say down. Pixie is 10 months now and knows the word down. She has scared the life out of me before jumping off the kitchen table, she use to like to climb up on the chair and onto the table. The first time I saw her jump down I decided to teach her down. They are never too young to teach them that, it could save them bad knees as well. I hope your little one checks out ok!! |
Sorry to hear about the accident and hope and pray your little one will be okay. I agree with others...to keep him quiet and crated until you have seen the vet. If it is a back injury, it can worsen from activity. Best wishes to you and welcome to YT. |

I'm not sure there is a breed more disposed to broken legs, especially as puppies, than Italian Greyhounds. Generally puppy owners are advised to NEVER let your puppies jump from anything they can't jump on. For instance, if your puppy can't jump onto the sofa, your puppy shouldn't jump off the sofa. Letting them climb up to anything is very dangerous and your puppy can be trained to not climb. I think I would have taken the puppy to the emergency vet, but I always prefer safe to sorry and piece of mind knowing one way or the other if my baby is okay is priceless. |
Rhett is as fearless as he is fast. I try to not let him up on things, but darned if he doesn't find a way to outwit me every once in a while. I'm willing to bet that everyone's dog has done something that made their heart stop for a moment or two, no matter how vigilant we are about watching them. To the OP, I hope your little one checks out well at the vets. Neck/head injuries are always scary. |
welcome to YT. I hope you'll be back on Monday to give us all an update on what the vet said after the exam. I hope no permanent damage is done. go look at the thread "I'm worried about Layla" see what that owner has been going through with her dog's spinal injury. These dogs are fearless but fragile. I hope you and your dog are more careful going forward.:) |
