You are so right on many levels with your post. This site, with all the wonderful people here and knowing I have all of you to cry to helps me more than any of you know. This is such an awful thing to go thru, for both of us, as you know. It's the most helpless I have felt in a very long time. I am very devoted to her. I have barely left her side since this began. I have researched this disease trying to find out what I can do, what she needs, etc. I'm trying to make her as comfortable as I possibly can. As for the fluids I have to do here....................ugh! I am not looking forward to doing that. I really don't like needles at all so this is going to be a tough one for me. I'm gonna do it for her and to help her, but WOW! I'm not looking forward to it. Just to update you and everyone that may be wondering...She is having a pretty good day so far today. She's (luckily) kept her food down and has had a substantial fluid intake. She actually got up and moved around for a little bit...not long, but long enough to make me cry from happiness. I'm hoping she continues this way for a while. Will keep everyone posted. Thank you again. You're a wonderful person | |

| Thank you Hi Jamie: It is so nice of you to be so kind to me when you are in such pain yourself. I hope you will have some practical instruction for doing the hydration, it takes some courage at first but the technique will come. As I mentioned, the little dog takes it very well and that helps. The benefits are immediate and rewarding. It is so encouraging that your little one is eating and having long periods of normalcy. It seems that the kidneys still are functioning quite well or that would not be happening. My Nik could only last about 2 hours before the hydration gave up on her, and that is why we could not go on for very long with the home treatment. So try not to be sad, if your baby keeps up this good progress, she will be with you for a long time. I know well how one keeps trying to learn more about this disease as it comes on so suddenly to an apparently perfectly healthy dog - without warning. I thought it was the food/treats etc etc that I fed her, or toxins she picked up on walks or ???? It is as if you have to know what caused it, and as human caretakers of our pets, we always blame ourselves for anything that befalls them. Needless to say, after many months of research, I have come up with no solution - apart from seeing that it was probably in her genes. Really, take heart as there is so much hope for your little one. You are doing all you can and she is reacting so well to your excellent care. Hang in there and keep up whatever you are doing, it seems the right path to be on. God bless and hugs. | I just lost an IG nearly 18 years old to renal failure in Feb. She had been diagnosed a year and a half before and I gave her sub-q fluids during that time. The frequency of the fluids I gave went from once or twice a week to everyday. It was easy to do and you could ask your vet if they can show you how to give them and supply you with the fluids, lines and needles. I am thankful I had the extra time with Poppi. Oh, and part of the time I was giving them, I had help, but when I didn't, I would hang the fluid bag from a hanger on a hook. I would put Poppi on a crate pad on the floor, with her in between my legs. I would also wrap her head in a towel. She was really a good little girl. My heart still aches for her loss.

| Pleased! Hello..... Well, I wanted to give everyone an update. I took my little one (Ciera) to her doctor yesterday for a checkup. Surprisingly she has GAINED 4ozs which shocked the vet. I started her on Hill's k/d 2 days ago and she LOVES the stuff!! So, she's eating like a pig! lol!!! The vet said her weight gain is surprising to her since most animals tend to eat less and lose more weight while going thru this. I told her the truth and told her that tho she eats less than normal, she has never missed a meal, that when the day comes that she wont eat, that'll be the day that I realize that she is dying. Anyway, I wanted her to go on the Purina n/f diet but no one had it anywhere in my area which is another shock since the Purina plant is in St.Louis about 2-1/2 hours from where I live!! Instead of waiting for it to be shipped in, I wanted to get her on the kidney diet promptly and decided to get what I felt would be around when I needed it. The vet also put her on Epakitin which is a supplement to lower her numbers (which have, in fact, lowered slightly ) She also put her on Maalox which taken with meals will bind the phosphorous in her blood. She also put her on an iron supplement (lixotinic) because she'll become anemic. And lastly, she put her on 1/2 of a pepcid every day for any acid that she may be developing. (she said they sometimes get ulcers) I also got trained to administer her sub-q-fluids and am ready to do that. The vet was afraid I would get over-whelmed with everything I have to do and I told her to just tell me what needs to be done and I'd assure her it is being done. I want my little one to be comfortable and God willing, get better and stay with me for a while longer. I'm remaining in close contact with the vet. They call me every couple of days or so checking on her and told me to call them any time I need them so I feel good knowing this. Anyway, wanted you all to know how pleased I am in her progress. God bless all of you for all the wonderful advice you've given me and for being there when I needed someone. Thank you all!! I will come back and keep you updated on her. Love and hugz....... Jamie |

| Wow that is a lot for your to handle all at once, but seems like you are really up to the task with the guidance of a good caring vet. I wish the best for both of you in preserving and extending her quality time with you.

| Thanks for the update, good news is so darn welcome. Your vet sounds great and it also sounds as though you have a good relationship. It makes a big difference. How great that you've got Ciera eating so well and even gaining weight! That's really terrific.
