head trama My 11 month old yorkie was playing this evening in the kitchen and jumped up to grab a toy and fell back and I knocked his head. He yelped when he fell backwards then lay there not moving and staring straight into space. I scooped him up and ran to the emergency vet. The whole way there he did not move a muscle and his tongue hung out of his mouth. I thought he broke his neck and was paralyzed. The vet took him as soon as we got there put him on oxygen and took x-rays. She said he was in critical condition and only time will tell if he is brain damaged. He only slipped while jumping and hit his head. It was on a tile floor (very hard) but he fell maybe from a 3 inch hieght. Could this cause severe brain damage or is it possible he might recover. HE is staying there at least overnight. When we left he was at sitting up but when he tried to walk he was very woozy. I am worried sick because he is our baby and the love of my daughter's life. I don't know what we will do if something happens to him! : ( |
Hello and Welcome to YT! I am sorry to hear about your baby, I hope and pray that he will make a full recovery. I have not had experience with this so I don't have any advice. |
hang in there as dogs can get concussions like humans. I have had a few friends where one had a yorkie that fell of bed and is fine now and another one fell out of a dog bed when her bf was carrying her like a taco in bed and she fell out on her head. They will give steroids to help with swelling on the brain. Hang in there and we will pray for your little one |
No experience with this but I will keep your little one in my thoughts.... welcome to YT and please keep us updated |
Oh.....I'm so sorry to hear about your little one. I will surely keep him in my prayers. Please keep us posted. |
I'm so sorry to hear that. Sending all my energy to every member of your family. XOXO |
Good job getting him to the vet so quickly. The danger with head tauma is the swelling that can occur after a fall, or a bump. Getting him to the vet for treatment quickly definitely increases his chances of a complete recovery. Steroids are used to reduce the swelling, until the injury starts to heal. Without treatment, a dog or puppy can die. Recovery depends on a number of things. How quickly he received treatment, how hard he hit his head, what part of the brain sustained the impact, etc. It really doesn't take much to cause this type of trauma, just the right sequence of events, and the way they come in contact with a hard object. The most important thing is to get treatment immediately, for the best chance of full recovery. There is no way to tell how he will recover, you just have to take it day by day. Great that he was sitting up already... he should continue to improve from there. Best of luck... Welcome to YT.... |
Wow this must of been so scary for you! I hope he makes a full recovery. I have hardwood floors and just area rugs down and my girl sometimes looses her footing and slips when she is running around on the exposed hardwood floors. I get so scared too when I'm in my yard with her and fear that she will bang into something running around and hit her head since she is so fast and loves running around like a crazy maniac. Please keep us updated on your babies condition! |
I agree - good job getting him straight to the vet and I'm so sorry - poor guy was just trying to have fun :( you must be feeling so helpless.... I hope he improves and comes home quickly - your post is a good wake up call for those with tile - I used to have beautiful tile floors and never thought something like this could happen from simple playing :( All the best and prayers to your family |
Sending prayers for you little guy. Accidents can happen so quickly, I am glad you were able to get him to the vet immediately. Keep us updated on how he is doing. Praying for a complete recovery. |
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers. The vet called at 2 in the morning saying they couldn't stabalize his heart rate or blood pressure and he isn't able to stand on his own. They were going to increase fluids to try to minimize the swelling. I hope to hear better news this morning. The other problem is calming my daughter. She is blaming herself since she was the one playing with him at the time. I still can't believe this happened sooo quickly. Thanks again and hopefully I will have better news later. |

Momo hit his head on a marble table when he was playing & threw up, he was walking wobbly too. I rushed him to the ER & they did x-rays. He was ok & back to his ol self in about 24 hours. I pray that your little one improves & comes home soon. |

Hope your furbaby is okay! Sending prayers and hoping for an update. |
I'm just seeing this now. How is your little guy doing today? I can just imagine how horrible your daughter must feel. She was only playing with him and for him to have been injured like this. I'll be checking for an update. |
Continuing to pray for your little guy, and tell your daughter not to blame herself. Accidents happen and it could have been anyone playing with him. No one could foresee something like this happening. I hope to hear good news on your next update. |
Hi everyone Again I can't tell you how much your prayers mean to us! Sorry this took so long but between work and visits to the hospital I was away all day. We ended up taking our baby to a neurologist today for further care. He is still very groggy and not standing. When we went to visit this evening the vet said he has improved from earlier today. He did give my son a kiss...something he hadn't done since the accident. Yea! He is still not using his legs but he does seem to be a little interested in what is happening around him. They are hoping his symptoms are just from brain swelling and hope that things will get better as the swelling lessens. Right now they are doing everything they can for him and we just have to wait it out. Ill hear more in the morning. I really miss him tonight! Thanks again |
Thanks for the update! glad he appears to be doing slightly better... it is also nice to see someone who cares so much for their little guy and is doing everything possible to get him better! You and your pup continue to be in my thoughts |
I'm glad to hear there has been some improvement, will keep him in my prayers. Please keep us posted. |
