Just checking in on Layla and so happy to see that there's been improvement! Bless her sweet heart...yours too! I am praying that she will be walking again soon!

Thank you all again for the support! Her vet just called and said she didn't have as much movement today as she did on Friday. But Scott said she had a long hard weekend so maybe that's why. We'll see if she makes more progress in the next couple of weeks.

I broke the strict crate rest rules a little this weekend. On Saturday night we were at Scott's parents' house and we made a little fence with our bodies on the bed and let her lay down between us so we could hug and kiss and love her for awhile! She also got to suck on a pillow for comfort. Overnight she was in her crate with the door open as always (she NEVER tries to leave!). At 9:30 am my alarm went off and I sat up and saw her still snoring in her crate. At 10:00 am Scott got up and she had pulled herself out and dragged across the floor to lay on one of Scott's shirts on the floor Dragging is a no-no right now. I felt terrible. She did it because there was carpet, and she never tries to get out when it's hardwood under her.

Anyways, later that day we went to the lake and Layla was in her crate in the yard. I set up a hammock and let her lay on my chest. That was okay, she was very still and just laid her head on my chest quietly. I think that was okay to do because she wasn't moving. Later she was back in her crate, and Scott walked past me and I asked him to get her some more water. I got up to give him her water bowl and as I turned around she was halfway to me already dragging herself across the grass. So her crate had to be closed completely.

Back at the house, Scott's baby nephew was over and Layla was not comfortable ANYWHERE but with me. She wouldn't stop yelping and crying and she was obviously stressed, so I let her on my lap.

And then on our way home there was no room for her crate in the back seat because his mom had bought us a really old cedar chest for our house. So we took the crate apart and Layla was on my lap again for the drive. She was so quiet and well behaved! She slept for half the trip.

I know crate rest is supposed to be STRICT for 6-8 weeks following surgery so I hope I didn't hurt her at all this weekend. The sites and support groups have said NO laps, NO couches, NO beds, 100% of the time in the crate except for potty breaks and exercises, so am I being too soft? There's got to be some negative affects of being stressed out too. I'm not letting her jump and get excited, just lay on me quietly.... I just hope I'm doing the right thing for her

I never dealt with anything remotely close to this, so don't listen to me. lol

BUT, I don't see any difference between her laying between you two (as long as it is laying and not dragging herself around) or cuddled up on your lap than in a crate cuddled up. I could only say that I could never be that strict with Ellie and I think it is just fine to do what you are doing and take her out to love on her. As long as she can't fall, drag, etc., then there seems to be minimal risk.

I feel the same way... and the vets who have been working with Layla and even her surgeon say it's fine to have her on the couch watching tv with us or whatever as long as she's still and comfortable. We had one scare with her "jumping" off the futon the first week we had her home, so now I always have a hand on her if she's not her in crate. I do her exercises with her laying on the couch and me sitting on the floor in front of her... one arm around her and the other moving her legs. I have been told NO by the other forums but I feel that we're being safe, and that it's saving my back from doing everything on the floor! It's more comfortable for both of us I think.

Thank you. Sometimes it's hard being in the situation to see that she's making any progress because I just keep remembering how she was and wanting it all back! But I know she is getting there, slowly.

I took Layla to Reiki again today, and again she just laid down and let her work. As she was finishing she told me to keep thinking positive thoughts, and imagine Layla running around and playing, thinking about her favorite toys and favorite things to do and places to be, and to send those thoughts from myself to her. She said she knows Layla will get those thoughts and it will help her brain remember what it's like to walk on all fours and run and play and give her more motivation to heal herself. She said to be positive ALL THE TIME, even if Layla is nowhere around and I'm talking to someone who doesn't know anything happened... she said it's okay to say she had this problem and there was some damage, but SHE IS GETTING BETTER and SHE IS HEALING. I should never say "She might not walk again" She explained that the more we think about those things, the more the universe gives them to us. If we always say we're broke and we can't afford things, we won't. If we think good things for ourselves, good things will happen. I feel that's kind of right when Layla went down and I didn't even give a second thought about affording the surgery or affording the therapy. I just said we're doing it and we will find a way. And what do you know, all this money we weren't expecting (okay the condo profit we expected but money from the lawyer was unexpected) showed up! I just need to believe and Scott just needs to believe and I think amazing things can happen, and WILL happen!

Layla's stroller/carrier arrived today and she LOVES IT! It surprised the heck out of me, she's never been in a carrier before so I didn't think she'd be so happy. But, she settled right in and is now sleeping. I took her for a little ride around the main floor of the house and she loved that too! This was such a great purchase!

Thank you all... I can't say it enough!

We used Layla's carrier in the car for the first time today and it didn't go so well. She couldn't see through the mesh so we kept the top open for her to poke her head out but she kept crying and trying to climb out I kept trying to push her back in, pitifully, because I had a couple of spots removed from my skin Monday so I have stitches in my hand that she was trying to scratch up! I'm also hobbling around with stitches on the bottom of one foot so Layla and I are a nice couple of cripples together But anyways, I think we're going to stick with the wire crate in the car after we get home today. I don't want her to end up hating her stroller and carrier because she hates being confined on car rides!

Glad to hear Layla likes her new stroller...I agree that you should continue with the crate if she is hating the carrier portion in the car. It is better that she enjoys her ride and likes her stroller...she is safe in either. I was also happy to hear that she has been responding to her therapy...even if it is not as quickly or a positive as you wish to hear....she is still responding!! Keep up the good work....hugs to you, Layla and Scott.
