Hi Joanne, sorry to read you are having isues with Chipper's health, all the best for you both, I can just imagine how you most be feeling.
Now, if you don't mind, let me ask this, if he was asymptomatic, how did they find out what he has? Is this blood test done as a routine? Was he doing something that made the vet think they should test for that?

First thing your vet can do is the Bile Acid Test. I think the fasting/non-fasting issue has to do with the involuntary release of bile that many dogs do in the middle of the night, which will throw off the prepandial (first) result (may be high).

Many times a UTI will be going on also, crystals may be present.

Could he have gotten into something toxic?

Another YT member went to Texas A&M for diagnostics, and basically it was a total farce. Stick with U of T.

great info - did they do urinalysis as when they did dd bats we did urinalysis along with it as well but i did free catch on that

i think she had it done since he was from byb and he had thrown so she was nervous but being 3 i think signs would have come up sooner BUT i did help one on here that had bladder stones at 4 turned out he had multiple shunts when tobias opened him up

he was asymptomatic other than stones per owner

Thanks,these babies are so delicate that is always good to know and keep informed.Sophie would be spayed soon and needs a blood test done for it, what should I ask the vet for, other than what she needs for the surgery?..now I want to know if she has any health issues..

per our vet all yorkies and maltese should be bile acid tested as it is so prevalent in breed. I would do pre and post bile acid and full blood work up and urinalysis by free catch prior to anesthesia -this way kidneys and liver will be checked thoroughly to have the best out come under anesthesia and you will know if all is ok

Will request it to our vet. Is a preparation necessary for these tests? Are they done in house, or sent out?

Once again, I really appreciate everything that is being said to me. It will help me when the vet talks to me. Everything is Greek to me. My vet has been super good at figuring things out for Cocoa when K-State did nothing to help except diagnosis her. She knew nothing about EPI and learned with me. Together we are keeping Cocoa happy and healthy. Dr. Laurin said that she has been on the phone with U of T this morning. So I think she is going to do what is best. I'm so grateful for all of you. ~Joanne~

Oh, she said that she really needed to know Dr. Centers name. Not sure why. Said she had called Cornell but needed more info. Weird.

The question came up as to the protein level in the food Chipper is eating. He's eating Orejin. It says 40% crude protein. What does that mean? My dh says that is extremely high. Didn't know if there is a difference in just the protein % or crude protein %. Oh, I am going to be so upset if my switching him to Orejin has caused this problem. Maybe is would have happened anyway. Tomorrow Chipper gets his fasting BAT. Praying for good numbers. ~Joanne~

My Lucy had higher BATS when she was eating TOTW.

eek that is alot so I would lower the protein and retest in 30 days before panicking too much since no symptoms

you need to lower to 22% for dogs with no symptoms and dogs with symptoms it is 18%

i always have blood work and urine sent to lab as they calibrate the machines better i think and what i hear but if it is something i need fast and i am concerned then will allow for inhouse -i like inhouse cpli for pancreatitis as it takes a few days to know on that one and i want to know now on pancreatitis not in a few days and amylase and lipase are not always accurate with this

I also like free catch urine off back of wee wee pad even if contaminated a bit as do not like the needle in the bladder cysto even though more accurate and sterile as they have to use guided ultrasound for that and make sure they do - just do not like that myself even though many say real safe
