Just back from a second opinion. Vet indicates that diesel has a fracture on his leg and not a tear. Took xrays and confirmed this and also indicated that he seems to be healing ok and that no surgery would be needed at this point. Diesel will be on rest for 6 weeks. I am breathing a sigh of relief. Thanks to everyone for your support in all of this.

thank goodness as dd had acl injury and we rested her for 2 mos and fine. So glad you got a second opinion as i think these little ones are rushed into surgery for this stuff far too quickly so kudos to you for trusting your gut and getting another opinion

I had him looked at by a specialist and they did the surgery. He still never put full weight on the leg so I don't know if the surgery was helpful or not. Maybe the rescue has a vet they work with that would do surgery at a lower cost. Don't blame yourself it is impossible to keep them from jumping 24/7.

this is exactly what i learned in researching it - you rest dog for 2 mos if they are still lifting then you have to get surgery but it is a two month wait and see as in small dogs the scar tissue build up acts like a tendon and they do fine at it happens in 80% of dogs and 20% have to have surgery - either way they will have arthritis surgery or not - i have seen dogs have the surgery and they are lifting leg after the surgery
