Poppy just swallowed a piece of gum!

Hey everyone!!!

Thanks to whoever just bumped this up, I tried finding the thread a little while ago and couldn't find it.


So we got Poppy to the vet and she had blood taken and was given fluids when we very first got there as a "just in case"...the blood came back fine. I don't really understand what exactly they're checking for there but the vet tech there said we aren't the first people to come in with a little dog who got into gum.

We pretty much came to the conclusion that the dog didn't eat any gum. She never ended up showing any signs of anything, her vitals were all perfect, they took her away from us to the back to do whatever they do when they do a physical exam and said she is fine and also did an x-ray of her belly (which they also did once when she was a lot smaller and swallowed a chicken bone ) and they didn't see anything abnormal. (would they be able to notice gum? they do know what they're talking about, right?)

So the vet told us to watch her and watch her poop. (which has also been fine, we were told she would have vomiting and/or diarrhea if she were poisoned)


I'm still a little nervous, but only because of stories I've read online....but the vet said she's fine. I'd like to note this cost a FORTUNE over nothing and subsequently we are looking into new pet insurance. (we had her on puppy insurance at her regular vet that we found out doesn't cover emergency care...I'm really ticked about this)


Thanks for everyone's help and concern! Gum is hereby banned from the house. If anyone knows of any specific insurance that they'd like to recommend that is great for emergency care, that would be great! Clearly, no one expects a piece of chewing gum to cause this much of a problem. Who knows what else can happen! I'm just glad she's okay, but I will be watching her pretty closely, I surely didn't sleep very well last night even with the vet's blessing.

I am so glad she is ok. I banned gum and anything sugarless from my house too. I love gum and I keep it in my desk at work, but none at home. I have been so worried for you and your little one and am so thankful she is ok.

Thanks so much, even with a vet telling me she's perfectly okay, I've still been sitting here watching for "signs" of lethargy and inspecting her poop.

SO paranoid... GOSH! My husband thinks I'm going overboard...but then he called me at lunch and asked how Poppy was doing So clearly I'm not the only one still a little concerned.

It's just so scary going to google and reading all the horror stories and even LAWSUITS going on due to this chemical! I'll be extra careful with checking ingredients from now on. I even read a couple of stories about sugar free pastries that big dogs got into and died from eating. SO sad!!

I am so glad that she is doing well. I am sure it cost a fortune to take her but knowing is better than not knowing. I am glad you posted this as I had forgotten the reasoning why sugarless gum was bad....but never allow it in the house...now I remember why. Getting old stinks... So glad she's okay... as for the vet... somestimes dogs will eat wrapper and all, and that is what may show up on an xray, or they may see an abnormally shaped thing, like something oblong or square, and that is also not good.

I'm so glad you took Poppy to the vet and he's doing well, if you read this link you will see that you didn't overreact. snopes.com: Xylitol Deadly to Dogs. Xylitol is much more dangerous than other sugar substitutes , and I think every product that uses it should have a warning label, "Can be deadly to dogs, seek vet treatment immediately." Once I found about the different sugarless sweeteners I will no buy any that contain Xylitol. Hope Poppy continues to do well, and perhaps you should write the Orbit Company and send them a copy of the bill! They need a WARNING Label!
