| Oliver throwing up Oliver is throwing up - a LOT. We went through this last spring too. He eats everything and anything he finds outside, and has a sensitive stomach, so he gets sick in the spring. I am quite concerned this time though, as it seems bad. Luckily he's bigger, so I can wait it out for a bit longer... but if he's not improving by tomorrow I'll have to take him in to the emergency vet as my vet is closed on Sundays. Not something I can afford after paying for Mya, so I'm really hoping to avoid it. I tried to give him some children's gravol that I had left over from our long car trip this summer, but he threw it up. I'm wondering if maybe he is just stressed from me bringing Mya home. He does seem to be affected by stress. Even though they are getting along great, he is jealous of the attention I give to her. I am trying to give him lots of 1 on 1, but maybe it's not enough. YT prayers would be very appreciated. I am so very scared for him.

| Approximately how many times has he thrown up and in what period of time? Are his gums pink and moist? Are they sticky or tacky?

Donating YT 10K Club Member | It is still highly likely vomiting...A LOT...will cause him to be dehydrated regardless that he is "bigger" now. Please take him in...dehydration can quickly become fatal.

| He's been throwing up since this morning - 6 times so far. 4 was mostly his breakfast and lettuce (he loves romaine hearts) that he got before we realized he was throwing up, and a couple times was yellow bile with grass mixed in. His gums are pink and moist, and look normal. He had a big drink about 45 minutes ago and so far has kept it down. He has been getting cottage cheese once a day lately, about half a teaspoon mixed with his kibble as I ran out of yogurt (he's a picky eater - has never had an issue with the plain yogurt tho and eats well when I use it). I'm starting to think that could be the cause as it's high in protein, and he's never handled large amounts of protein well. That's why he eats a low protein diet. I feel pretty bad for not even realizing that I was giving him something that could make him so sick, but I hope that's it as it's an easy fix. No more for him, ever.

Portosystemic Shunts FAQ Regardless there is an underlying cause that needs to be determined.

As long as he is holding water down and his gums are moist, he should (presumably) be okay tonight However, sensitivity to protein could be a problem. Less than 1 tsp. of cottage cheese should not cause any protein reaction. It could be lactose intolerance although most dogs seem to do okay on a small amount of cottage cheese.

| As far as I know, he has not been tested for liver shunt (he's a rescue). We did not do extensive testing when he was sick last summer, as it seemed to clear up on it's own within days. I will talk to the vet about getting Bile acid tests done, just for peace of mind. If he continues to be sick, we'll get it done sooner rather than later. I can't see lactose intolerance as being a problem, as he has been getting 2 spoonfuls of yogurt a day since August and hasn't thrown up at all until now - he also used to have very loose stools, which got much better after the food switch and yogurt added into his diet. I don't want to put him through extensive testing if it gets better, but I will do the bile acid test for sure, as if he does have a shunt we need to take action before it gets worse. Would a dog with a shunt be fine for 8 months tho and then start vomiting again? He's been 100% healthy since August.

| He's fine today I fed him a little rice last night at 10pm and he kept it down. He slept well, I could tell he was really tired when he didn't want to come outside with Mya and I at 4am, he usually follows. He's had 2 meals today of rice and a little bit of kibble and has kept it down. Seems fine energy wise now too. Doggie flu perhaps? I don't know. Still going to talk to the vet about bile acid testing just to be sure.
