my 7 year old with kidney failure what do i do

I lost Dixie my 7 month old yorkie puppy to congenital kidney failure. I took her to a kidney specialist and he thought he could help her but she had too little kidney function to survive. He did say he had a lot of yorkies in his practice that had been doing great for years with fluids and medicines. I hope you can get some better news tomorrow.

I am sure the chicken made the numbers higher. Did the vet suggest a kidney diet? She absolutely needs that. Also....if her appetite is not good....ask the vet tomorrow about giving her mirtazapine. It is a wonderful drug for these pups in renal failure.....it does three things... cuts down the nausea, controls the vomiting and increases the appetite! I had a renal issue pupster and kept him alive for four years with good medical management. Even if they are in end stages, sometimes you can get some quality time with them...with good management.

First, they need fluids to get those numbers down...then diet change. Do not give chicken...too much protein! The vet should suggest a kidney diet...they often say Hill's K/D...but I have found Purina NF to be more palatable for the pups.

I will say prayers...hope tomorrow the vet comes up with a plan.

my friends yorkie is living with 25% use of kidney and is a liver shunt survivor so i just text her as she lives in New Jersey and i think the kidney specialist is in New York so will post the Specialist she goes to as she really likes this person. Are you near RedBank facility have you heard of that ?

BUN was over 130 and Creatine was 4.4....vet says she is at the very end of kidney failure

A second opinion would be best, sometimes it just confirms what you already know but, maybe another vet will offer, or see something the first didn't.
I pray the second opinion goes well and the plan of care allows you more quality time with your baby...

ok friend recommended a nephrologist at animal medical center in Manhattan - she said it is a woman- here is the link to her that woman in the picture is the nephrologist and nephrology is a specialist in kidneys

Also, did the vet indicate why your Yorkie's temp is so low?? Normal temp for a Yorkie should be between 101 and 102 degrees. This alone sounds suspicious.

I would definitely get a second opinion from a vet kidney specialist.

Don't give up hope!!!
