| gagging and gasping for air. pls help!!!!! This morning Lola started gagging and gasping for air. She was making the same noise that cats make when they have a hair ball on their throat. this took like a min and then she was fine. I went to the kitchen a noticed throw up on the floor, it was a lot of water with yellow mucus. after 2 min she did it again and again. DH told me that her belly felt like it had a lot of gas so I gave her a natural medicine for gastrointestinal problems just in case that was what it was bothering her. She only throw up once and now she seems fine. She is eating and drinking water and playing like nothing happened. Does this ever happened to anyone else? i want to know why she was gagging and gasping for air. |

| Well thank goodness she is ok, glad for you that the episode is over. Thank goodness it doesn't appear to be too serious. Start keeping a log of every single thing you are feeding and doing with your baby. Tomorrow call the vet and make an appointment to go over the situation with them, this will put your mind at ease. The symptoms you describe could be any of a number of things. I wouldn't worry too much, just keep an eye on her and if the problem worsens and becomes constant etc. contact your vet or an emergency vet a.s.a.p. Good Luck Lynn p.s. yes this does happen to my Miss Mini on ocassion. It comes and goes and has mucous and yellow. I don't worry about it, it passes, and I had asked the vet about it and I can't remember what the heck she said exactly, but if it was anything serious I would remember every word! | That happened to Peek a Boo one morning. The yellow bile he tried to vomit was so thick it got stuck in his throat and blocked his airway. This is a concern anytime a dog vomits though. Since then I have added an infant aspirator (blue rubber bulb squeezy thing to clear infant noses) to my first aid kit, along with a copy of the CPR instructions from the YT Library: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/eme...uture-use.html Depending on whether or not the airway is completely blocked or only partially blocked, there may not be time to make it to the vet in time to save the dog. Clear the airway first, perform CPR if needed, then go to the vet. If the dog's tongue is pink, he's getting oxygen, if it's turning purple, he is not getting enough oxygen and is an emergency.

| It could be something called reversed sneezing. Sounds soooo scary, but nothing to be worried about. Let me look for my video for you.

In my mind I see a person sitting at a computer typing the above whilst the Yorkie is laying on the floor gagging for air. This person then sits back drinking coffee whilst waiting for somebody on YT to answer the plea for help. This could be today, tomorrow, next week or perhaps never but whilst waiting the Yorkie continues to gasp. Suddenly an answer arrive which says something along the lines of.... "I have no clue as to what the problem is but don't worry it will pass"! Another message arrives asking a question but no suggestion as the the problem and so it goes on. I just can not get my head around this as I have FOUR little babies of my own and I can tell you this.......... If any of them show any signs of anything I am not happy about then off to the vet regardless of cost. One of my little one started gagging at 1am this lasted a few minutes so I did an emergency call out which cost me a small fortune. The vet examined her and said there is no problem but confirmed I had done the right thing as it could have been just about anything but suspected it was a problem with her Trachea and suggested I read the following : Collapsed Trachea|Small Dog Throats Now I ask any reader not to judge me on this post I am in no way chastising the OP all I am saying is I can not understand why people post a plea for help like this instead of calling the professional right away. After all, your pet totally relies on you for everything.

Many times reverse sneezing is brought on by allergies. When mine start to reverse sneeze I pick them up and blow softly into their nose. This will help to stop the sneezing reaction. You can also rub their neck to help. Truthfully, the blow into the nose works the best.

| Oh good! Baby does it when she get's excited. It's a spasm in their trachea I believe. It's like they are trying to take in too much air at a time thru their nose is what it sounds like to me. What I do is try to calm her down and cover her nostrils with my fingers. This forces her to breath thru her mouth. Depending on how strong the spasms are is how long it will take for her to stop. You will notice that as soon as you cover her nostrils, she stops and starts to lick. But if she starts to breath thru her nose she'll start up again. Also, sometimes a treat gets them to stop b/c they are concentrating on the food and breathing thru their mouth. I know it's VERY scary! My mom still freaks out when her "grand baby" does this. She always yells at me...cover her nose! haha. I'm used to the reverse sneezing and it doesn't scare me anymore.

| Vomiting can also trigger reverse sneezing. Usually if they vomit yellow bile in the morning upon waking, feeding them a snack right before bedtime may prevent it.

| Did you ever smell bully stick vomit? Smells like urine. I never gave her one again. I swear it was the bully stick that made her begin to reverse sneeze in the first place!

| Funny how different people read things so differently. First to the OP, glad you felt like you should check in with others once the problem had passed to see if you could figure it out and if you should take further action. Also glad you've identified the issue it sounds. If you see an increased number of incidents, I personally would check in with your vet. To bWY, I noticed one person saying check with your vet if it gets worse, another suggesting it could be something and taking the time to go get a video to show physically what it could be. I DIDN'T notice anyone saying "no big deal" What I DID notice, is there has been only one person in this thread who instead of offering advice to the OP, (whether it be go to the vet, or not) spent time commenting on others actions. My two cents. Quote:
