Trachea Surgery for collapsing trachea Does anyone have any experience with having the trachea surgery for their dog? If so where did you go and what was the price for the surgery? We might be getting in a dog that needs to have this surgery if the dog is a candidate.... Any information would be great... Thank you, |
Try meds first My cousin in LA has a yorkie with severe trachea collapse and both her vets discouraged the operation. They said it's the worst trachea they have ever seen. Her pup just coughed and coughed. She has her pup on meds that are working great! I don't know what they are but she is very happy since starting them. We have a few friends that have refused the operation too, it's really just a patch and then not long after another area collapses and you're back to sqaure one, at least that's how I have heard it described. Maybe get another Vets opinion before your final decision? You can PM me anytime. :) |
i am against this surgery as a friend on another yorkie had the surgery and died shortly after as the stent collapsed - there is not a high success rate and it is a fairly new surgery so i would never do this surgery :( there is a group for this collapsed trachea on yahoogroups.com - i recommend joining that group for management |
There are many medications you can use. I personally would not do surgery for a collapsed trachea....I have yet to see good results. I recently lost a foster that had CT. He passed away on Christmas Eve. He did well for a long while on medications. One that many vets don't know about is Lomotil...we got great results with it! Hi, We don't even have the pup yet and might not even get him. I am just looking for information on the surgery as I have not been able to find any information where it has been a success and figured I would post here. We obviously would consult with our vets and try medications before any drastic measures...just looking into options, as we are told he is pretty bad I just wanted to see if anyone on YT has had success with the surgery or know anyone who has... I just lost a dog myself in November who also had CT he was diagnosed at an older age with CT and responded well to the medications. He past away at age 13 from a heart condition, however I do believe the CT put a strain on his heart. This dog however is under 1 years old and already has a CT so in the long run I am thinking he worse off then my Peppy was. |
We are getting the pup in tomorrow....once I have him we will be able to see how his trachea really is.... Thank you everyone for the information... |
The best advice I can give is to try not to let it upset you. CT pups can scare you with the way they sound. Many people were frightened when they heard my little Ozzy, but most of the time he really was not in respiratory distress in spite of having that awful honking sound. It is important to watch the colors of their gums. I always stayed relaxed believing that it helped him. He was older and really a bad case, but I was able to manage him for quite some time with medications. After he passed, my vet told me that in most cases he would have died. I just was very attentive and did a lot of reading and was willing to try different meds. I played with a lot of different meds (under vet guidance of course) and found ways to position him when he was asleep so that it was easier for him to breath. The humidity here was very difficult for him. He also had to lose some weight. He was 4 pounds when he came to me and gained a pound, so I had to put him on a diet. Keeping them cool and calm is also good. Keep us posted...I hope he is not as bad as you have been told. |

I can't add anything here in terms of advice...so I just wanted to offer support, and I hope you keep us posted. :) I'm facing something somewhat similar in that my Marcel may have an "elongated soft palate"...and surgery is recommended as an option (esp. bc he is young)...and I too am in research mode, and a bit of freak-out mode as well... |
I lost my Gracie at 6 to a severely collapsed trachea about 13 years ago and she did ok on meds for almost 2 years but it took it's toll on her heart and lungs and sadly she passed at 6. I checked into surgery at that time and the vets at Texas A&M consulted with me by phone and said where her collapse was (thoracic area did not have a good outcome and the complications were many and they would not recommend it for her. That was a long time ago and hopefully they have more advanced procedures. I hope the one you are getting can be maintained on meds. |

My decision had nothing to do with money, but everything to do with what I would put a pup through. Thanks for all the info... My Peppy was pretty severe in the end too...however it was his heart that failed him in the end.....we took many rides with me wearing a sweat shirt in my car with the AC full blast, eventhough I have central air he needed more when he was in distress... You are right it sounds horrible...my vet is great many times I just went over to have them check him out....it was the toll on his heart that concerns me the most. I am told this pup has trachea congestion? I was trying to find information on exactly what this means..... I guess I will have to see when he gets here and I get him to the vets... Thanks....I am sure I will be in touch about medications... Peppy was really only on a cough medication that workde really well for him..which I was lucky about... sometimes he was on another too... |

congested, can hear wheezing, some coughing too I have him...he sounds very congested.... he has had some coughing...but not real dry honking... however was worse after he drank water You can hear him when he is breathing ... wheezing...questioning if he is has Pneumonia or a real severe case of kennel cough....leaning towards the pneumonia.... Going to get him in tomorrow to one of our vets for x-rays etc... He is very tiny 6 months old. Say a prayer for him.... the poor thing... |
