Trech
 

I am new here,and my baby Donte turned 3 xmas eve.He has this Trech problem and the Vet gave me Oxycodone 5-500.I also have some pills he gave me,to help him.
I have been so upset by all this.I am 62 and have never had small dogs until I bought Donte,he was a little over a year when the people decided they could keep him because of their hunting dogs.I also bought a playmate for Donte,her name is Bella,she is 2.She has no problems at all,she is Yorkie Poo.It doesn't say that on her papers,it says she is a Yorkie.
Anyways I brought Donte in to the Vetnwhen he acted like he was choking.They put him to sleep and took 2 hand fulls of flem out.He suggested I go to Charleston,in South Carolinia where I live.I don't want the surgery for him,not just cause of the expense but because I think it is too dangerous.I can't explain how I feel but he is my heart and I for one would just as soon as keep him on medication.
If anyone out there knows of other things I can put him on,I would love to hear from you.I am telling you he is VERY important to me and I can't be without him.
What do you think of the oxycodone he is on?I try to get it through my Dr.because it is so expensive.
Anything you know that can help me,please do.

Talk to your vet about the following things:

Tell your vet to read his Vet Therapy book about CT! There are a lot of different medication options. One is the use of Lomotil. I have personally had a pup on it and it did help. I also know of two other yorkies who responded well on it.
Main things to do: maintain a healthy weight for him, keep him as calm as you can and keep him out of humidity.
We used Theophylline, but some people don't think that does much good.
Also....Temaril P or prednisone. (mine was on Prednisone at the end when his condition became severe)
Alternating cough meds helped with my recent CT boy. We used Torb alternated with Hycodan. Also on bad nights, I had injectable Torb combined with Ace Pro and it really worked! It makes them loopy, but is enough to get that inflammation down so that they can relax and breathe better.
Good luck. Honestly, my experience is that in the end it will get them...the heart can only take so much; but you can buy some quality time for them with good medical management.
I am so sorry....I know how difficult this condition is.

Hi...

Cupid is doing okay....still coughing but seems to be gaining more strength everyday....

He will for x-rays next week to see how the lungs are clearing....

We were told over the weekend by our "GP" vet that my dog's trachea had collapsed, but not thankfully in the thoracic area. After already having one dog to die from this horrendous condition, we acted fast and kept her calm, cool and away from irritants (pollen which is at 6,000 at this writing). Today my husband took her x-rays to a specialist who puts stents in Yorkies and said, that her condition was not at a point to where we'd want to do this. They also have problems with dogs who actually cough up stents. What he did notice was that she has an enlarged heart and this is pressing on her airway and putting added strain on her lungs. We did not take our dog in, but scheduled a consult with the specialist, because we knew that the moment she would enter another vet's office she'd begin to get excited and start to honk again. I would suggest doing this, if you just want a 2nd opinion.

I'm so glad to see this update on Cupid. I saw him on Yorkies Inc. and was wondering how he was doing. I'm so happy he pulled thru and pray for a hasty recovery. He is so adorable.

Took Cupid to Tuft today for a video scope of his trachea and lungs. The good news is that the pneumonia is basically gone but he has a severe trachea collaspe. We are going to be treating him now for the trachea.... lets hope some medications work for this little guy. They said his trachea was very severe considering his age :-(

I am so sorry Tae1107 that your boy is going through this. As a mom of a male who died from CT at the age of only 4, I know what you are going through. My little girl, who is 8, is currently suffering from CT and also CHF. What I want to share with you and what I've already posted on YT is that if your boy is currently taking Theophylline, as my girl is, then please make sure you are using the Barr pharmaceutical brand. This company was recently bought by TEVA pharmaceuticals. My 100mg pill has the imprint code PLIVA / 483 and is an extended release drug. It is imperative that the pill NOT be crushed or taken in a liquid form. I found that Kissy will swallow it being hid in a little liverwurst.

I've blogged and posted a thread with the link and how you can findt he exact pill that my Kissy now uses found under:Theophylline - Enlarged heart (Cardiomegaly)and Collapsed Airway Disease . She was so close to death with both conditions and has done a complete 180. It takes a while to get it into their systems and she must take 1/4 tablet 2x per day. I hope this will help you, as many vets prescribed the pill, like my regular vet did and it was the wrong manufacturer. The specialist told me to throw it away and he ONLY uses the Barr manufacturer.

I am so sorry. This is such a horrible condition. :( I hope that he does well with the meds.

I have had good results with Lomotil in the past. Problem is that nothing fixes it but surgery and that is only temporary if at all. :(

I've just taken my Sebastian, 10 yrs old, on an emergency to the vet. I've been informed that his trachea is collapse, with liquid in his lungs and an enlarged heart. I know have been reading so much about this. I'm devastated. I need honest, candid advice on what quality of life I should expect Sebastian will have? My concern is that I don't want to keep holding while he is suffering, even with medication/treatment. I want to make the best decision for him, not me.

Has been some time but wanted to write a quick update on Cupid. Cupid did end up having a trachea stent put in....he had this operation at the end of June. His trachea became severly collasped in a matter of days and it was our only option besides putting him to sleep and he had fought too long and hard for that.

He went in for the stent one day and was home the next. It was not an invasive surgery at all like the trachea rings..... while we all know this is only a temporary fix, they have changed what the stent is made of and at Tufts most dogs are living at least another 3 years with the stent and no issues.... they have only been using this stent for about three years so in the end it could be longer...

Cupid was able to see his 1st birthday this month!! He still does have some coughing/hacking and is still on medications most likley for life (more due to his lung damage)...however he is now able to be the puppy he never could be. He plays all day, runs all the time and is constantly bothering his foster brothers.
