| Max ate a cotton ball! On Saturday, my daughter left her bedroom door open and Max ate a cotton ball from the garbage can. Since then after eating breakfast he has thrown up (Monday and Tuesday). I gave him BARF raw patties. He has kibble in the pm which he has kept down fine. He's not acting funny, he's pooped every day. I've looked for the cotton ball, but didn't see it. Just now, I gave him his kibble and he threw it up. He is 12 pounds, does anyone think perhaps some kind of obstruction? Should I take him to the vet?

| I'm guessing your boy will be OK. There was a thread around Christmas time on what to do if your dog eats part of a broken glass Christmas ornament. It advised soaking cotton balls in half-and-half and letting them eat the balls: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...han-never.html

| Oh my! PLEASE do not feed cotton balls to a pup! I suppose you could ask your vet about it, but I find it unimaginable that they would approve of such a thing. To the OP: If this continues with Max, I would have a vet check him out. Even though he has had bm's I would be concerned. One of the techs at my vet has a Weim puppy that just had surgery to remove a tiny cat toy mouse that was stuffed with cotton. It caused an intestinal blockage! He has had two operations and almost died. Definitely not something to mess around with. To those who read that other thread, I would honestly NOT use cotton balls. If my dog ate glass, I would give bread instead of cotton balls, and I would not use cream. Before doing anything, I would consult my vet!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Are you sure it was actually cotton and not synthetic? Was there chemical(s) on the "cotton" ball that he ate, if so, are they toxic? I would call your vet ASAP, but first I would have the info I just mentioned on hand.

| The other concern I would have is if he ate something else in the trash! I really would not play with this.

| Thank you ladies...I've already been to the vet with Max. The doctor didn't seem too concerned with the cotton balls. He examined Max, no abdominal tenderness, no distention, stools normal, appetite normal.... He said that cotton balls are usually fairly easy to pass and that he probably already passed it since he stools 2x day. I asked him if it could be his diet...he was leaning more toward the vomiting resulting from his diet rather than the cotton balls. He's been eating the raw patties for about 3 weeks and on Acana for a couple of months. Here was his treatment plan: 1. A shot of nausea & vomiting at the office 2. Anti nausea pills to take at home 3. Antiboitics-- in case he has an infection 4. Prescription diet--Hills's I/D kibblej What??? I asked him if I could just keep Max on dry kibble for a week and see if anything changes. I told him I'd rather be a little more conservative with his treatment. I'm not concerned with dehydration as he's not having constant vomiting or diarrhea. He said he was fine with whatever I decided to do. So then I look at the ingredients of the prescription dog food...it has corn and some other things that I don't feed Max. I asked the petnurse if I was being unreasonable by not wanting to do what the Vet suggested; and if I could keep him on the Acana that he' s been on for months. She did say that 33% crude protien may be a little high for him and that I should change him to something with 28% crude protein or less. Atremis has 23% crude protein so I may change him to that next. Of course, if the vomiting persits, I will take him back. Needless to say I'm changing vets to someone who is not so aggressive. Am I wrong? Does anyone have any suggestions...

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | This happened to my son's dog and the doctor suggested some canned pumpkin as well as pepcid. Check the poop, it took about 5 days before we started seeing fibrous poop. I think about 1 Tablespoon of pumpkin for every 5 pounds is what they suggest. Remember not to use pumpkin pie filling it has sugar in it; use regular canned pumpkin. I'd probably keep him on his regular food, and just add the pumpkin. Sometimes changing the diet can do more harm than good. The pepcid stopped the vomiting.

My daughter saw him eat the cotton ball. She uses them with rubbing alcohol at night to clean her face.
