The nuero is about 5 hours from where I live. I was debating on going to UCDavis as they are a teaching school but I didn't know if I should pay more for an MRI there (where students perform) or a little bit cheaper for the neuro in Roseville, CA where I ended up going instead.

Teaching hospitals are wonderful! Don't let the student thing scare you...you can get great vet care at them. They don't do anything without supervision and usually by a VERY qualified vet!

I have been to Texas A & M a few times and had nothing but the best in terms of care for my pups! They saved the life of one of my pups...had he not had his surgery there I am convinced he would have died.

If it was cheaper at the one you used, it makes sense....but the student thing should not really play a roll in decision making imho. If you ever decide to get a second opinion and, since you are requesting copies of your MRI and records for some reason, I would strongly suggest you think about taking them there.

I know the bills do add up. Being there in Ca. I would think the neuro would have seen it all with so many people and pets. However I would still have chosen UC Davis. So your saying they will charge $2,000 ? I thought WSU was high, WoW. You just need to pull out the credit card and suck it up . That's what I did. You gotta do what you gotta do when it comes to a life. I am anxious to read the report and compare it to my girls report. Maybe I'm way off but when I saw the pic of molly my 1st thought was she has what my girl had. If she does she will be on meds for the rest of her life unless they do surgery. I was told it is way too risky on yorkies because they are too tiny and this surgery is very hard on them and they often don't make it . The neuro oversees everything , they don't just turn the students loose on your pet.

Also maybe they wouldn't need to redo the MRI they could just do a reread on the ones you already have since it is so recent. I would call and find out . In fact I think they will take a look at the MRI and tell you what they think. This deformity is very hard to detect and if the neuro is suspecting something else he may have not looked hard enough at the rite area to have seen it. The students caught the cyst but not the deformity in my girl. But the neuro saw it because he knew what to look for. This is something that is seen in the King Charles and a couple of other breeds. Kinda new in yorkies and mostly do to BYBs and mills, simply bad breeding . That's what I was told at WSU. I think I read something about it through AKC as well.

So, I was confuse at first when you mentioned Molly being my dog but I thought you must have mistaken it and you just said it again so I know you definitely think I'm someone else?

I remembered calling around to different places and UCDavis was a bit more expensive but I think overall, I paid about $2500 on Bella's MRI at the California Veterinary Neuro & Neurosurgery specialist in Roseville, CA and yes I just pulled out the credit card. I've had people ask me if I thought about just getting a new dog with that money and I told them it wouldn't be the same. Plus I want to know that I did everything I could just in case something goes wrong.

Yep rite person and dog just wrong name. So the head tilt and the apparent vision problem is all a part of it. Did you read about Chiari syndrome yet ? Please do and tell me if the symptoms fit your dog.

Is that the same thing as Syringomyelia? I looked up chiari malformation and mostly Syringomyelia comes up. Just want to make sure I'm reading the correct thing.

You know, I actually watched a clip called pedigree dogs exposed (I believe) that talks about this condition and how it affects mostly king charles. Crazy how you mentioned it because I was telling my husband how sad it was to watch those dogs go through that.

Bella actually doesn't show any signs of pain. I like to rub her head, neck and body to see if she is in pain but I get nothing from her. She also doesn't show any signs of having the malformation. I'll let you know more about her condition once I get her report from the nuero.

Ok I went to mayoclinic.com and from what I can tell the syringomyelia can be secondary, so yes. Mayo Clinic also gives good symptoms.

Mine didn't show signs of pain either but she had the head tilt and was , well seemed to be scratching at her ear as it says in the site dwerten posted for you. When she was around 2 she had what seemed to be a violent stomache flu and almost died . The neuro at WSU said that was all part of it . He said not all dogs do that but some do. That was before she had any other symptoms, years before. Then one day BAM there it was just like with BELLA ha did I get rite this time, lol. And the malformation is slightly diff in dogs.

That scares me. I'll ask the neuro what he thinks when I talk to him next week. I think if it was, he would have pointed it out on the MRI.

How's your little one doing? How's the head tilt and what meds is s/he on?

My girl passed away last year in Feb. she lived for 11 yrs though and that's pretty darn good if you ask me. I will let you know all meds when I find all the paperwork. I will look this weekend. I think everything bella is on except she also took theophalin not sure of spelling.
