| my 10 week old has a broken leg :( my boyfriend and i got a half teacup yorkie half maltese when he was 6 weeks old.. i was at my mom's place with my little man (Reese) when my boyfriend was in Calgary and my mom went to take the garbage out and Reese was sleeping, but when she came back in, Reese had woken up and ran to the door, my mom, thinking he was still asleep shut the door, not realizing littel reese at only 7 weeks at the time was in the doorway.. he cried and cried louder than i've ever heard anything or anyone cry, and when he calmed down i put him down to see if he could walk and he was only walking with his 3 little legs (just think how small he was at 7 weeks old and his parents are 3 1/2 lb and 4 lb full grown)... we thought maybe it was a muscle or something because when my dad touched him, his bones seemed in tact, so we left it to see if in the morning it would be better, but when we woke up, he was in worse pain than he was the day before so we decided to take him to the vet, turns out he had a broken leg... but he was too small to do surgery so the vet put him to sleep and broke his leg back to straighten it (it was crooked).. it is stil 3 degrees off, but i am just wondering, the day after the vet put his cast on, little Reese was in no pain at all and just wanted to run, the vet told us to keep him off his leg for the first 2 weeks, but its sooo hard to keep a little puppy from wanting to run and jump... for the first couple weeks he dragged his poor little back leg, but now he is beginning to actually use it to walk.. im so worried my poor little baby wont be able to walk the same since it was broken at such a young age... |

| I can fully understand what you are going through. My baby's leg is broken as well. Happened Sunday. She is 6 months old though. She was in pain yesterday, but today she is trying to run around. I had to put her in her kennel to keep her calm. She doesnt' try to "use" the leg that is casted, she just limps around on all threes. If you need to talk PM me. I can relate to what you are going through so much, even though my baby is older and 5lbs. Yorkie kisses and hugs your way. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your baby.

| a lot of people say my baby was too young to be taken from his mom, but Reese seemed to mature pretty fast... he wasnt dependant on his mom at all, was eating by himself, etc.... i DO understand he was taken from his litter mates too early as he is still biting my skin.. he's my first new puppy so i didnt know they had to be older, i just thought they had to have their first shots, because all the breeders were like "6 weeks old, first shots & ready to go" so yeah haha oh well, he's doing pretty good, eating puppy kibble... wont eat the softened food anymore... but i go to the vet on thursday for an update.. i'll let you all know the news |

| Sorry to hear about your babies leg. They are so fragile. I brought my boy home at 7 weeks. I didn't know any better so I thought nothing of it. Hope he does alright. Hang in there.

| hey guys, thanks for all your messages... i went to the vet today, he says baby Reese's leg is healing perfectly !! 20 more days and his cast comes off... it'll be such a relief. poor guy... but just another question... Reese was cuddling with me and had his nose between my arm and the side of my body, and he started making these loud noses, nose twitching, eyes twitching, hands twitching, then noises he made sounded almost like a dog sounds before he/she vomits (atleast hte way my other dog sounds haha) but im not sure.... he did the same thing when he was sleeping on my lap, but this time he was a little wet noodle sound asleep and sounded like he was choking, like something was too tight around his neck.... im not sure if this the sounds he will make when he sleeps/if it is normal... he stops the noises once he wakes up and is normal again, just a little scary! thanks guys |

| Hey question for you. How did you manage to keep your baby still for the duration of the cast being on? Man my Izzy is only on day 5 and she is running me ragged. I am carring her everywhere. I watch her like a hawk cause I am scared she is going to hurt her leg. She wants to go outside all the time. How did you do it?

| milomlo, our baby Reese stayed off of his leg for the first couple days because all he did was sleep.. then the puppies that they are think they are okay so they want to run and play... our doctor said to keep him off his leg for the first couple weeks, (it will be 4 weeks or so all together). we tried keeping him off of his leg, but he refused, started biting whenever we held him, unless he was tired.. so we let him do his own thing... and we're lucky that it is still heeling perfectly... but hes a puppy only 10 weeks, his bones are growing like crazy... so maybe we are one of the lucky ones... but i DO carry him as much as possible.. the only time he ever walks on his leg is at home during the day when he isnt in his kennel.. he wont sit still unless he is tired, so its very hard... he sleeps in his kennel, when he's bad he's in his kennel, we carry him when we go out, so he only walks on it at the house like i said... i know that isnt very good, but he's just a puppy, i dont want him to be cooped up.. i want him to play and have fun... so even if it takes a little longer to heal, at least he's enjoying life... thats just me though, others may have other opinions.. |

| I know this is an old post but maybe you have some advise or encouragement for my little guy. Jumped off bed 3 weeks ago, got cast off today and will be 10 weeks on Friday. Vet could not leave cast on any longer b/c bone callous is developing. He said the break is filled with bone but is still fragile. His little leg has NO muscle strength so if he puts weight on it, the leg will snap in the same spot. We are to let him down ONLY for potty break then either hold him or crate him. OK, this puppy is CRAZY! All he wants to do is run and play and jump (b/c he is a puppy of course). My question is how do i keep him still? If he cannot play, how do his little batteries ever run down? I am determined to keep him still. The vet said i could try benadryl or a very low dose of vallium...not to the point of sleeping all the time but just to take the edge off. I don't like the idea of medication b/c i feel that just prolongs healing, but i will do it if that is what it takes to keep him calm. any advise is appreciated! |
