| Irregular heartbeat...should I be worried? JoJo was snuggled up beside me asleep and I put my hand on his tummy and noticed his irregular heartbeat. From what I noticed, the beating would speed up as he inhaled and slow down as he exhaled. I don't know if he's always been this way, or if it's just now starting, but I'm worried. His vet has never said anything about it...that is, if she noticed it herself. Is this normal? Or should I call his vet in the morning? I hope there's nothing wrong with his little heart!

| That is known as a sinus arrhythmia .. and it is likely normal. Read more here, and google "sinus arrhythmia dogs" to read more.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | That's not irregular if it's only doing what you're describing...but it would probably be good to have your vet give a listen to it, just to be sure and safe. But all of us pretty much have a faster rate upon inhalation (<--link)...if that helps .

| Thanks guys. I've never heard of sinus arrhythmia, but I will definitely look it up. I'm very relieved to know it's fairly common. I feel silly now for having asked, but when it comes to him I'm a huge worrywart.

When I was in nursing school, I was self diagnosing w/ each new body system we covered. Every other week, I was on the phone to my sister (she's a physician) and was all "OMG I HAVE AORTIC INSUFFICIENCY!" and the week after that it would be "I'M COMPLETELY SURE I HAVE PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY!". She was so freakin' glad when I graduated. Of course...the self diagnosis just continues...and leaks over into my dogs...oy....

| LOL Wylie's Mom...we must've been separated at birth! lol My family thinks I'm nuts sometimes because I'm also a "self-diagnoser". I once had an eye twitch and diagnosed myself with some sort of neurological disorder. I may or may not have had a heart attack once when my left arm was hurting slightly (at 25 years old). I got one pesky chin hair and that led to my self-diagnosis of PCOS. Yeah, according to WebMD, I'm a walking timebomb. I think what's REALLY wrong with me is that I need help LOL.

Small dogs are prone to having sinus arrhythmias, but good to get this verified by your vet.
