I am so sorry for you loss. I wish Mia a quick recovery. I know that this is painful for you talk about but thank you for sharing your story. It will help to save others. Hugs to you and your family.

Yes, unfortunately mushrooms just pop up overnight and I am so afraid that they will eat them. We have a big backyard and sometimes they run to the end of their leashes and start chomping on things. Maggie more so than Hot Rod. I am constantly yanking stuff out of her mouth and yelling at her to "leave it" or "drop it" The good thing is that she listens.

Thanks for the warning! We've never had mushrooms in our yard until this week. We got a lot of rain recently and they just popped up. I'll make sure to go out and pick them all up before letting the pups out to play - especially the 5 week old Aussie pups that are just now starting to play out in the grass.

I'm sorry to hear about Maggie. l so glad your other furbutt is recuperating and doing good. The mushrooms in my yard come periodically and l always pick them out of the grass.... one can always be overlooked. Thank you for sharing.

What a devastating loss. I am so sorry for you. I knew they were dangerous, but... I appreciate the heads up, I'll definitely be much more wary, you may have saved one of my own dog's lives. Thank you.

I did know that mushrooms needed to be watched for, but walnuts?? walnuts?? anyone???

Walnuts are toxic to dogs. They cause stomach problems. Also, the fungus or mold that grows on walnut shells is toxic.

I am sorry for your loss of Maggie. What a terrible thing to happen.
I see mushrooms growing where we live and they seem to pop up
so fast. So many different kinds too. I have no idea if they are
poison but Buddy is bigger now and shows no interest in eating
things outdoors anymore. I'm gratefull for that now.
Wishing Mia a speedy recovery and I am so happy she was spared.

I do not know of any. I found that out because my neighbor in NJ had a walnut tree and someone told me to be careful.

..............I had a horriable disaster one week ago today. I lost one Yorkie female and one was at the vet from Thursday night until Tuesday evening.
Later the culprit was found to be wild (Poison) mushrooms and it was confirmed by the vet. Apparently the girls ate or played with the mushrooms and ingested enough it killed one (within 30 minutes or less) and put the other in ICU for 3 days and other 2 days for observation. Mia is only about 4 lbs and Maggie was right at 5 so it wouldn't have taken much.

My husband had let the girls out in the back yard for a while right before he went to work so they could do their bathroom duties and get a breath of fresh air. When he called them in all came back but Maggie.
Our son was over and he started looking over the yard for her and couldn't find her anywhere. To make a long and terrible story short, Travis did find her lying on the ground under the boat dead.
Mia was showing signs of some kind of toxin when I got home and that is why I rushed her to the vet as soon as I suspected what had happened. My vet said I was just darned lucky I didn't lose both girls cause the first day even he had his doubts Mia would make it.

I was in the yard the evening before trimming plants and cleaning up and I never saw a single Mushroom. Of course when I was looking for the problem the next day as soon as I got home to investigate what happened they were all over the back yard under the oak tree and down along the fence line. My goodness how quickly they formed and sooooo many. We have been in a drought for months and just recived quite a bit of rain over a few days, I guess that is what triggered them.

Folks please watch your dogs and let all your friends that have pets and small children know what could happen. (these are just as deadly to a child)

Maggie was my favorite and I raised her from a puppy and she was with me constantly as soon as I hit the ,she is so missed and I am still just mortified about her death.

I am so very sorry to hear about your loss. The mushrooms you are talking about are called death cap mushrooms. My nephews little Wheaten Terrier ate some of them and he didn't know it...he was acting funny and started to throw up. When he started to throw up blood they rushed him to the ER vet..He threw up so violently(all blood) they had to have their car professionally cleaned. Unforturnately little Benny didn't make it. He died in his wifes arms before they got there. I really worry about my girls when they are outside...I never take my eyes off them them..especially Lillie...she is 3 yrs old and STILL grabs everything off of the ground and in her mouth it goes!!!

We too have a bumper crop of big mushrooms the past few weeks. I have to watch Zoey, our foster/almost adopted, very closely on our walks since she is a nibbler and chewer. I firmly believe that it does not take much at all to cause health problems in our furbabies.

I am so very sorry for your loss, you have my sincere sympathy.
The very first time Winston had a hypoglycemic seizure my vet suspected he had ingested a mushroom...I went home and searched the yard, I too try to find them before he does...but sure enough there they were, they grow so rapidly and pop up almost instantly. I took that mushroom to every one I could think of to see if it was poisonous and possibly be the cause of his sudden symptoms. I never was able to prove it one way or the other. But the vet did show me a book that had pictures and symptoms. It did look like the same type of mushroom and one of the symptoms was hypoglycemia. But...he has continued to have these same seizures , and I know he hasn't eaten any mushrooms since. Who knows?
