| Coughing....should I be concerned? Sushi's little maltese brother, Mr. Big, has been kinda coughing for the last couple of days. Is that something I should take him to the vet IMMEDIATELY, or should I wait it out? In case it helps, here's some more information: He is very tiny, under 3 lb, and that's why I always worry to death when the slightest thing is up. He is 2.5 yo. The coughing happens usually when he gets up to walk around, or when he gets a bit worked up. It almost sounds like he is sniffing hard, ot trying to clear his nose or something. Don't even know if it's actually a doggy cough or not. Not sure if it's only a coincident or it's related to the fact thart I have been recovering from a bad cold myself for the past week or so. Can they catch things from us???? He is the one that always has to be close to me, on my lap, on my chest at night, very very close to me, so I wouldn't be surprised if he caught it from me (if it's at all possible). Any help would be greatly appreciated. PS: Hope it's ok to post about my maltese on a yorkie forum. Problem is, i haven't found a maltese forum as wonderful as this yorkie forum.

| It could be kennel cough- even if he has had the vaccine- he can get it. Kennel cough can turn into pneumonia- and for a little guy- that is serious. I would go to the vet and get some antibiotics. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | It could be some little reverse sneezing - does that ever happen? Also, was he given the bordatella vaccine recently? Or was he at a groomers?

| It never happened before. And the last time he was at the groomer's was a couple of months ago. He got his vaccines (which I think included Bordatella) back in May.

| Thank you so much for the link to the videos, and the maltese forum. The third video did not work (collapsed trachea). And out of the other two, I have to say it's closer to the second wone(reverse sneeze). So if it is reverse sneezing, how would you handle that? And what causes it? I took him to the vet on Saturday and they put him on antibiotics. He didn't do it over there for the vet to see but he said he heard a bit of wheezing when he examined him. i will keep an eye on him to see if there's any improvements. I get so scare with these little guys getting sick!

| ok asking wylies mom to update with this video of ct since the owner removed the maltese video so here is what ct sounds like vet is doing antibiotics as maybe thinking it is pneumonia in beginnings which can be related to kennel cough take a video when your dog is doing it to show the vet to stop reverse sneeze you put your fingers over nostril and open the mouth and it will stop immediately |

| oh poor Gremlin, he sounds so uncomfortable! I would have to say Mr. Big's conditions very closely resembles the reverse sneezing video. How does it happen? Why do they do it? Videotaping it sounds like a great idea, never thought of that!!!! I will try and catch him in the act, and will post the vide here.

| Just a quick update on Mr. big: looks like the antibiotics are working, because he is doing it a lot less than before. I didn't even see him do it at all last night. Hopefully this means it's going away, whatever it is that has been making him sneeze/cough like that. Thanks for all the info from all you knowledgable YT'ers. You're the best.

| It's been two days and he has not sneezed/coughed at all. I'm so happy he's getting better.

| My girl Glory started doing something similar. I first noticed it last spring (08), and then one day she started doing it really badly for about 20 minutes .. I was getting so scared for her! Then, right before we hopped in the car ... a HUGE blade of grass came out of her nose! After it came out, she was fine. THIS spring, she started doing like what you're talking about ... sort of like reverse sneezing, but more like she's trying to clear her nose. Her eyes also got watery. I took her to the vet this time, and he said its most likely springtime allergies. He said to give 2CC's of liquid benadryl when she starts to do it. Its seems to be working, but its really the weirdest thing!! Good luck with Mr. Big!
