| Is it Kennel Cough or Allergies? Gracie has been coughing for a couple of days now but this morning it was non-stop for quite a while. From experience I can tell you that it sounds like kennel cough. Sometimes she coughs hard enough to gag and spit up a bit. My dilemma is that she hasn't been anywhere to pick up kennel cough. Does anyone know the incubation period for it? You might recall that Gracie has a severe allergy to fleas so I'm wondering if it is seasonal allergies. Do the coughs sound alike? I have an appointment with the vet but I'm hoping for some reassurance. I can't deal with 4 sick dogs right now. |

| My dog caught kennel cough and my vet said its soooooooo easy to catch as it is airborne. Laci sounded like she was gagging more so then coughing and then white flem ( similar to us having a cough) came up and she would spit it out.. It confused me to because it wasnt constant it was more so at night and early in the morning. Has your pup been to a groomer, pet smart ? Even a simple walk outside as it is air borne.. Id would take your pup to the vet!!

| I LOVE my new vet! She just called me to ask me about the other dogs and after talking to her she thinks that Gracie is having a seasonal allergy problem Gracie hasn't been around any other dogs during the past 4 weeks so she hasn't been exposed to kennel cough. I'm going to try her on Claratin for a couple of days and see what happens so no need to take her in per the vet. Of course she could be worrying about her other patients getting exposed but somehow I don't think so. Big relief. Now let's hope the allergy med works. |

| She said that 1/2 of an adult pill would be fine for her at 5-6 lbs. and that a lot of people like it better than benedryl because you only have to give it to them once a day and it doesn't make them sleepy. I used Benedryl on her for the flea allergy and it was tough getting it down her. (liquid). I can't say that it helped that much either. I have used it on my shih tzu in the past and had good success though. |

| We just did the Claritin thing with Ellie (5 mg SID), but it didn't work. Bonbon, you can also use Zyrtec.

| Isn't that funny how meds work on some and not on others. Maybe I should start Gracie on the Zyrtec. That was another option the vet gave me. |

| Since little Skeeter has been snorting a lot we decided to try giving him and Gracie 1/2 of a Zyrtec each. I swear the very next day all coughing and snorting in the house ceased. It cam back about twenty-three hours later when it was almost time for another dose. That stuff is a miracle drug! Bonbon...it is the human Generic Zyrtec. I got it at KMart for about 1/2 the cost of the name brand! They are tiny little pills and really easy to wrap up in a little piece of cheese. |

| Sounds like you already have your answer and are getting relief!!! For the record, kennel cough will sound very much like a seal barking - same as a child with whooping cough - and once they start, it is difficult for them to stop coughing, though sometimes soothing talk and rubbing their throat will help. Kennel cough needs an antibiotic as it is very easy for it become pneumonia.

| Thanks Jodie, I had a rescued collie that came to us with kennel cough and Gracie's cough sounded just like his. That is why I was confused. I wish I had known about the soothing talk and rubbing their throat things though. He had a really bad case and I just left him alone while he was coughing. Hopefully I will never need to use that info though! Thanks again. |

| Kennel cough is really bad this year. My new little guy caught it on the plane. He started coughing about 2 weeks after we got him. The vet said they could get it just walking through the veterinary office. One lady told another breeder that she was just walking her dog and at an intersection another dog in a car coughed out the window and hers got it. My vet put mine puppies on antibiotics, but for most dogs you don't even need to treat it, unless they have other health issues. It will just run it's course like the common cold. There is no treatment, the antibiotics are to prevent pneumonia. |
